full lock steering disengages gear?

I'm not sure if this is a bad thing or it's normal but... I was in the parking lot today and I turned almost full lock and brought the car around but then halfway into the turn around it felt like the transmission (automatic) went into neutral or something because the gas just revved the engine and nothing to the wheels (while in the middle of the turn around).... so I let off the gas, continued the turn around, straightened out and hit the gas and it was engaged again so it was fine. It freaked me out, the car is less than a year old... Is this normal?

I did some more testing and some reading and discovered that my automatic transmission oil was low. That's what was causing this slipping feeling. I had to put a whole extra quart in it and then a little bit more to fill it... it's filled now... all is good. Learning from experience is as best as it gets.
