To answer your question , I launch my manual Z24 around 2500 rpm's at the dragway but thats with a 2.4 , optimal engine launch RPM's vary alot between diff cars, tires, etc.

This basically means your motor will wind up to 2800rpms before the power is transfered to your wheels. And it does it more efficiently than brake torquing at the start line. It basically allows you to put more HP to your wheels on the launch than you could stock, allowing better 60' times and in turn better 1/4mi. times.

The spine count and shaft size of the 3 speed and 4 speed are the same. Therefore, the same converter can be used on either transmission. The converter has a carbon ceramic clutch that is up to OEM specs.

I am going to have a tranny for sale here in awhile. It is an older 4T60 with v6 bellhousing. Racing rear end ratio. (slightly more than 4:1) Well built. Will come with higher stall TC.

Would anyone be interested in something like that?

If you want ordering info on the converters contact me or mike@converter.cc and ask about the 2500 stall converter production overrun for the J bodies. The ebay ad is not up currently, yet, there are still some left. About half are sold.

Same day shipping if you paypal before 3pm.

We were not expecting as big of a response to this part AFTER it was elmininated from the catalog. I am happy to offer this part to the JBO community at extreme discount. This will show the manuals how tough the auto J's can be!

I have mine here and it is going in next week. I will make a post obviously and some track times. I ran a 14.1 with my trans slipping horibly on 9psi.

I have it in my car. Other than that my car is pretty much factory. Mine was an even higher stall though.

It has been in there for about 40 000 miles. I have 64K ish miles on my car. Installed at about 20K ish miles.

No mess ups or problems with the TC to date.

The TCC works good. Trans shifts more firm than before. Pulls up hills with MUCH less effort that in factory form.

I'm sure a factory service manual, or even a Chilton's guide would have great instructions. It's a fairly in-depth procedure, not an oil change.

Interesting.. im definatly looking into this.. Next summer/fall my project is rebuilding with performance internals a 2.4 to replace mine and i wanted to get a new tranny since mine is gettin bad, and do w/e i could to make it perform better but i didnt have much luck other than the shift improvers(Interceptor, Shiftplus..), would love doing a 5speed manny swap but with knee surgery on my left knee a while back, clutching hurts after awhile..and not much is wrong with a auto anyway..but i think i might get me one of these later on.

Does anyone know where you could get one of these for a V6 Mustang?? I have a friend who has a base model mustang and we both know that with one good mod to my car I will be able to beat him (he has 190 hp and its auto). So since he got an auto, I was going to help him out and was going to look for something that tuned his shifting times, but that wouldnt be too good for daily driving. So this product seems better for him.

Hmm...this has been a good read for me. Just so I'm clear on how a stall converter works..how about an analogy.

So...let's say that in stock form. There's a man standing with a loaded little sleigh. The sleigh is tied to his arm by a rope. The rope is just long enough for the man to start pulling with minimal slack (meaning from his hand to the sleigh, there's hardly any slack in the rope). Now the man has to start moving that loaded sleigh from a stand still.

So...if we use my analogy:
Man = Engine
Rope = Torque converter
Rope length = Stall
Loaded Sleigh = Vehicle

Take the same man and sleigh..but give him a little longer length of rope. He can use this extra slack to get more of a "running start" to get his inertia going and thus making it easier to get that sleigh moving from a stand still.

Does that sound about right?

At first I was thinking that I'd look like an idiot sitting at a light, taking longer to take off because the stall is higher, but in reality it shouldn't make to much of a difference since while getting to that higher rpm, your engine isn't even under a load so you'll reach that higher rpm quicker and should hardly notice the slight time delay for taking off...not too mention than when the car starts moving forward, the engine is closer to it's peak power curve which means that'll teh car will accelerate slightly faster since the engine has more of that "momentum". Is my assumption correct?

this sounds like a fun mod and is farely cheap. Would this benefit a stock-ish 2200SFI with the 4t4oe?

Now that the guy has all the extra slack he's goning to take a running start and when he reaches the end of it end up falling on his butt. Kinda like a dog running on a leash...when they go to far they get whiplash. <---But I always got a kick out of it.

Now that thats out of the way...I'm waiting for my shift kit before I get this piece, but since I ordered from JBP and its going to Wisconsin it'll be a little while.

guys let me shed some light on this topic, i build converters and have for 10 years, i do alot of HiPerf. work. first a hi stall converter is merely a tuning devise, it will not add power. a 2800 stall converter will not rev up to 2800 and then launch.it will leave at lower rpms in a sluggish manner. 2800 stall couples the converter at 2800. if you take a 2800 stall behind a 200 hp 2.2litre and it stalls at 2800 and take the same converter and put it behind a 600 hp V8 big block it will stall around 4500. the higher stall the converter the more inneficient the converter is either by bending the internal fins or using a smaller diameter converter. it takes more engine rpm to compensate for the inneficiency. if you make more power in your engine and use the stock converter you run the risk of breaking the tires loose when you launch. by switching to a higher stall you soften the hit allowing more power to transfer to the ground. no spin and leaving closer to your powerband leads to better e.t. unfortunately it hurts top speed in the trap. lucky for you guys the 245mm converter thats in your j-body is a highly efficient converter. it comes in 6 different stalls from the factory. it fits the 125, 440, 4T40, 4T60 and some of the 4T65s. i use that converter along with an aftermarket kit to build racing converters with engines making 1200 hp. for race only applications the hi stall converter is used with a trans brake, the trans is locked in 1st and 3rd at the same time, the impeller of the converter spins at engine rpm while the turbine attached to the input shaft stays stationary, if left on for over 4 seconds the fins in the converter will lay over causing failure. when you are brake torquing your converter you are doing the same thing at a lesser rate and creating a ton of heat. heat kills converters, try to keep the time you brake torque to a minimum. you cant go wrong using Yank, Mike Senia is the best converter builder in the world. he taught me alot ten years ago.

So you're saying,
If we can get a little higher factroy stalled converter then that's the best of both worlds?

thats really all your getting from any rebuilder plus any reinforcments like furnace brazed fins (which come from the factory on later models.) theres a 4 digit code on your converter, the 2nd digit is the stall code, Y is lowest, then L, D, Gor J ( same stall different stall/torque ratio J being the later) K and Z being the highest. all converters made for the past 10 or so years have only been Y,L,D,G & J. all the internal pieces are interchangable which makes the 245 mm so tunable. the different combinations along with fine tuning the fin angles gives stall speeds from 2600 to 4800 rpm based on 400 ft lbs of torque. the only thing thats changed is the lock up clutch material which has gone from cellulose paper to hi carbon to woven carbon. woven carbon is exclusively for EC3 systems. the cores are a dime a dozen.

Kyle Rosenberger:

I mentioned this post to Mike over at Yank.

He said thanks for the glad words and hopes you are doing well. He wanted to mention some of the unique features of this converter that are not mentioned in the sale or on the ebay auction.

EBAY

This converter was built for General Motors (later SLP) for a special project. It was all new parts with a heavy duty thicker gauge cover asm. It has a heavy blade turbine, and a special heavy duty, extra thick blade #5 pump. The #5 pump has high efficiency at high RPM while maintaining a base stall speed. (This pump is very special and is only available from us in this converter. It was a very limited production built. It is not available to the general market in any other converter. It was way too expensive to make for such a low volume market.)

This converter has meet and exceeded GM design criteria for the current high RPM 4 cylinder engine market.

The converters are being sold by me as I was told to liquidate the inventory by Yank Converters and GMPT. SLP has no interest in selling them either, again due to low volume of sales. When the units are sold out there will be no more. #5 pumps were a prototype material and they can not be offered anymore due to the tooling being destroyed by GM. I found this out in several phone conversations with GMPT and Yank Converters. This is due to a major cost cut back in the FWD market segment. The converter is being sold way under the break-even point. Anyone taking advantage of this now will be getting the best deal possible.

After making such a large push for these units just to be offered AND even volunteering my car to be a testbed for this product, I was really sad to see such disinterest in the FWD torque converter market. A torque converter is one of the best mods for a FWD automatic car. People really have no idea how much it helps out, even on a factory car.

Neither SLP of Yank has much intention of offering 4 cylinder FWD converters in the future due to lack of sales. Interest in imports converters are similar. With Dodge and Ford it is nonexistant.

^^ Just so you know I think mine is broke . As stated above excesive heat can cause failure and as soon as I pull the trans (again) I will be sending the converter for analysis. to see if it was the cause of my problem. Not claiming it is a bad product in anyway at all. Just stating that I think this may be the problem and The 3rd trans is going in next week. Too expensive to send the trans out to get fixed so I keep buying replacement 4t40e tranmissions for cheap.
