Gear Ratio?
Thursday, May 27, 2010 11:33 AM
Does anybody know the stock gear ratios for a 99 cavalier? Manuel transmisson, 2.2. I am trying to get more pull off the corner with my circle track car. I need more third gear.

1st 3.91
2nd 2.18
3rd 1.45
4th 1.03
5th 0.74
FDR 3.58

Here is a good thread for you to check out regarding gear swaps in the Isuzu.

I just did the 4.11 final drive swap. I'll let you know after Friday how it worked. Right now I'm @ about 3000-3500 rpm off and just about 5000 rpm when I'm ready to lift. Hopefully this will wake this motor up!!!!

Please let me know. Im looking to do a final drive gear swap this weekend. Just need an idea what the 4.11 swap will do. What is the size of the short track you run at?

3/8 dirt

I run a 4/10 asphalt. Problem is i know i am only getting to maybe 5500 rpms at the end of the straight-away. You think a 4.11 final drive gear would give me more pull or am i gonig to run out of motor?

so I was able to pick up about 1000 rpm across the board, more would have been better. I would like to have been on the rev. limiter in to the corner but I'll take what i can get. I still can't touch the Neons and Escorts.
I think that this would work pretty good for you, you should be hitting 6500 rpm when you would be lifting.

Im probably going to need more rpms than that. Now what is the next option for a gear. I know the stock gear is 3.94 and the 4.11 is to little. Just need an idea of what to try?

Look at the link I sent you. Also, check out this one. It lists a few more transmissions. Look through the various ratios and see if changing out any of them may give you the RPMs you need for those gears. If none of them will work, the only option is to change your tire size. 4.11 is the steepest gear available for our transmissions.

Your rev limiter will shut you down @ 6500 rpm. So unless you have a way to by pass that and a lot of motor work so it holds together, you won't be turning anything higher. Also you should have a 3.58 final drive, not 3.94. Also I'm running very small tires...185/60/15-19560-15

Does anybody know what the rev limiter is on a 2002 2.2 cavalier automatic?

I run even smaller tires. Now i run on a 4/10 asphalt track. I dont want to run out of motor. So what 3.83 or 4.11?

As long as you don't go over 6K, you're fine. IIRC, the 2200 rev limiter is around 6200 (in gear), but I'm not 100% on that. However, even if it's higher, you're past your peak, so it would be pointless to over that anyway. Figure your math out so that you spend the most time between 4500 and 6000, and you should be doing good. If you're running even smaller tires than Joe, you probably want to go with the 3.94.

Now where can i get a gear? Can I buy it from a dealer?

Dude? You need to do some more research. Also if your looking for help post a little more info. What size tires are you running? I was able to gain 1000 rpm on just by dropping tire size. With that said YOU should do the 4.11 swap (if you have a 5 speed, I'm not sure now?) and adjust any over rpm (hitting rev. limiter) with your tire size.
I wish I was in your situation where I could increase my tire size, then I could get my car to handle a little better.
No, I read (on here) the the 4.11 is not available new any more, go to the junk yard.

Alright, let me explain. I have 2002 cavalier 2.2 vin 4. It was an automatic but i converted it to a 5 speed when i used a
transmission from a 97 cavalier. I run on a 4/10 asphalt track. I have to run 14" hoosier racing tires. I just want to know how to get more pull off the corners. I know a simple gear change will do. Problem is i dont know what to change it to. I really think the 3.83 will be all i need. But i really want to try a 4.11. I dont know where to get one. There are no geo's in junkyards around here.

Geo Storm GSi, Impulse XS. Stylus RS. These all should be DOHC motors and the 5 speeds should all be 4.11 f/d

I just went a junkyard and bought a 5-speed transmission out of a 2001 chevy cavalier. I took it to performance shop an d asked about puttina 4.11 or 3.83 gear in it from an old geo. He told me i have a newer style transmission and the 3.83 and 4.11 gear will not work. He said the transmission i have offers a different set of final drive gears. I dont know if this is true or not? If so what are they?

A 2001 transmission is a Getrag F23. A 1990-1999 is an Isuzu. I have never heard of a single Isuzu part that fits in a Getrag

Then what gears can i use?
Re: Gear Ratio?

I hate to break it to you, but there really aren't any gear upgrades for the F23. The good news is that a stock F23 is as strong or stronger than a built Isuzu.

I also race on a 3/8 mile asphalt circle track. So far I've had two Ford probes but now will be running a 1999 cavalier with the 2200 motor and 5 speed. We don't run a spec tire so any street tire is allowed. I want to run a Federal ss595 but don't know what size tire to put on my 14" rims to get off the corner but also hit the power band on the straights.
