I just purchased mine. Need to get the right pre-load shims. Do we know the specs and/or part number of the belleville washers?

Forge that I'm just going to buy it from this guy because its cheaper than buying my own washers and new bolts. Your text to link here...

They shouldnt stick on the newer versions of the obx. Supposedly they have fixed it on all models.

That is good to hear. Hopefully I will not get an older one when I order

So...I just took my LSD out of the box to look at it. Haven't taken it apart yet, but noticed this right away. There are a bunch of small holes in the casting. What do you guys think? Should I be concerned about this? Anyone else have anything similar?

Looks the same as the one at the start of this thread. I would assume it is okay. Mine was the same, except I didn't have all those air dots up above the holes.

did the OP ever do the tear down/install pics? and LSD sounds like a nice little addition

btw, i know its probably 'safe' and not a huge deal to most... but i dont like the idea of a 'solid' piece of metal thats being abused quite abit having air pockets and losing what could easily be manufactured with 100% integrity... though it just must not be a major stress point or it'd be a concern

I would like to know what the shims specs are if anyone has them, I found a video on youtube but it was in a foreign language.

Do you mean the cone washers, aka belleville washers? Trust me its cheaper to buy the kit from the guy, rather than trying to piece together something close to correct from mcmaster.

you have to measure the pinion depth and from there you figure out what size shim you need and purchase them thru gm

So...I've got a bit of a problem. Dropped the LSD and trans off at the transmission shop. They are having a problem with the LSD fitting into the case. Apparently the LSD itself is rubbing on part of the case when they are trying to put it back together. He at first thought it was the bearing and removed the shims, same problem. I thought it possibly needed to be machined down like others have had to do on the surface where the bearing sits. But it doesn't sound like that is the problem. I may have to go there and see for myself and take pictures. But has anyone else had this problem before?

Which side is rubbing? Can they put the case together? I am willing to bet it needs machined...

I'm not sure which side is rubbing. It was hard to tell over the phone. I'm going to go there tomorrow to see for myself. From what he said, they couldn't get the case back together. He was fairly certain it wasn't the bearing that was hitting, but the LSD itself.

I had taken the LSD apart and ordered new belleville washers and installed them like so: )()()( Maybe that configuration added too much distance making the LSD "longer"? I'm not sure at this point...

And just to be sure, the part in yellow is what you guys have had machined down, correct?

In another thread I found, you said that you machined the case. Was that a typo?

Ahhh, that makes sense. I bet you're right. Now I just need to verify that the yellow part is what was machined, and how much. I think it was .004"...

Okay, so I just got back from the trans shop and saw the problem for myself. I've got an odd situation. I need the exact opposite of what everyone else has done. The ring gear side of the LSD needs to be machined down, and the other side need to be shimmed. Here's what is going on...

This part of the LSD:

Is hitting this part of the transmission:

Re: OBX LSD How To

Haven't heard back from the trans shop yet. He was going to machine down the ring gear side, and try and add more shims to the opposite end. If that wasn't enough, he was going to machine down the edge of the LSD. I should know sometime this week what the result is.
