c20get with f23?
Friday, December 09, 2011 11:08 AM
So I'm in the process of pulling parts off of 2 2000+ cavys, both of which are manual, 1 is a z24. All parts are hopefully going into a 1989 sunbird gt with the 2L 8v turbo c20get / lt3.
I pulled a shifter assembly and the shift cables out ot one car. I tried doing some searching on if other people have done it but I'm really struggling to find much. I don't see much at all when searching for c20get or even c20.

I really want to get away from the auto, I have already grenaded one lol.

On to my questions:

Will the sunbird axels work? Should I grab the cavy ones.

How can I be sure I'm getting an f23 and not the Isuzu tranny?

on to the clutch options, will I need a c20 clutch and a cavy specific pressure plate?

if you pull a manual trans from a 00+ j-body, it's the f23.

Ok that's good to now.

Well I'm getting the trans and axels tomorrow, Gooing to grab the trans mount too, don't know how long it will take to hacksaw off, they might not allow any power tools in the yard.

have you considered that the trans you're pulling isn't even remotely the same bellhousing pattern as what you're working with? OHV=/= DOHC =/= your engine. good luck, dont see it coming to be without much fab.

C20GET == SOHC, not OHV. I really know very little about the SOHC engines, so I have no idea how anything might fit together. The only way to know for sure is to just try to stick them together. I can't say I've ever heard of someone using a newer transmission on one of these engines.

Its hard to guess. The LN2 was of the same time period, BUT the ecotec is related in the GM engine tree. I'm going to guess that clutch wise you will need a C20 pressure plate and a f23 friction disk. Though you may need a custom pressure plate for this one.

granted. but the f23 you're looking at came either bolted to an ohv engine or the olds- derived dohc which both will have different bellhousing patterns than your sohc.

Well before going hard and pulling the trans, I did some googling and found nothing really informative, then a friend Chris told me that it won't fit. I will need an f40, or an m32 out of a cruze.

From what I can tell, its from the same "Family" of engine as the Ecotec (as mentioned above, and reported in the Wiki article). If it shares the same bell housing bolt pattern as the Ecotec, you can use the F23 trans found in the '02+ 5 speed EcoTec vehicles.

Or it could use the Common GM Small Engine bell housing pattern, and the 2200 F23 would work.

Get that Eco talk outta here!!!!

I believe the 1.8L (same approximate generation) out of the sunbird turbo's had the same block as the old 1.8/2.0/2.2 blocks... and as such, would have the same bellhousing. So if you get a F23 from a 2200 car then yes... it should work.

lol, I just googled the engine code, and it brought up that Wiki article. Not my fault! Also found some guys trying to mate the same engine to a F40......

LOL... I'm just givin you @!#$... if its out of a sunbird (AKA old) the Eco wasn't even a glimmer in the eye of Opel... So I doubt by chance it would have the same bellhousing... now the quad 4 maybe... but eco? Naw...
