There is a special puller or make a tool.

My buddy ended up welding a bead and they popped out.

Is there anything special that needs to be done to break in the LSD or can I drive it hard and go to the track right away?

I had the exact same issue with my Quaife. The trans shop machined some material away for the diff to clear the housing. Ironically, all I was changing was the bell housing from an Eco to a LD9

Just signed on to this forum and looking for some info.
This thread about the OBX unit into the F23 has been dead for a long time.
Any updates on this install?
I am planning this upgrade to my transmission and need some additional info.
Has anyone else done this?
Had the same clearance issues?
Gears in the wrong direction?
Rebuilt the unit with the new washers/bolts?

I installed mine right out of the box... No clearance issues, no rebuild, and have had no issues with it thus far.

strat81, did you install it yourself?
If so how did you measure the preload of the gears?
Any trouble doing the job?

I did the install myself. Measured the mounting of the bearings on the stock diff and then shimmed the bearings on the obx to match.

Only issue I had was that I cracked the case on the trans because I didn't seat the dowel pins before bolting it back together.

I see you do a bit of autocrossing.
That's my thing here in CT.
I have an 88 Fiero that I just installed the F23 into and now will pull it all apart again to install the OBX

I wanted to try things out first to see if it would work.
No issues yet so now the switch.
Have a buddy with a Cavalier 2.2 that he plays with too

The lsd was one of the best mods I did to my car for autox.

Nice fiero!

Bob mines been a nightmare. I took it to my friend who owns a transmission shop, after having bearings honed to slide on man off to measure the preload, we finally go the LSD preload set to match the stock one with different shims to find out the obx LSD isn't machined true. I can turn it half way and it binds and is impossible to turn. I have mine at a machine shop now trying to get the differential machined true enough to get it to work. No one in the area seems to have the proper tools to do it so I have a friend doing it who does everything the old school way.

Rob,
cool dash.
Sorry about your troubles with the diff.
That is the only one I've heard of that did that.
Hope I don't have the same problem.
How old is yours?
I was told they have done a few revisions and the new units are better than the older ones.
But I don't know when that change took place.
Mine should be here on Wednesday.
I will check it for true prior to anything else.
Thanks for the heads up.

Mine is brand new. I bought it in the beginning of the year.

Just received the diff today and it looks OK.
No air bubbles in the casting.
Will try and check for run out tomorrow if I have time.

Disassembled the diff today and checked for run out.
Looks like .002"
Is this OK?

Another good thing,
I tapered the drive gears to allow the release of the axles.
If I hadn't they wouldn't not have been able to release.
i tried it on an old axle with just the gear and sure enough LOCKED ON.
I had to cut off the axle stub. So, kept grinding until it they would release.

Hey guys. About a year ago I installed the OBX LSD also.
But my dumb*** didn't taper the drive gears like you did to allow the axles to be pulled in or out.
That is the biggest mistake I have ever made. Nothing we tried can get the axles out.

So now as we are trying to remove the transmission from the car and the axles are in the way.
We removed every part of the axle shafts as we can but still no luck.

We tried a dremel, sawzaw, and even a cutting torch.. nothing. So if anyone has any bright ideas on how to remove
that shaft and cv bearing housing that's attached to the shaft which is inside the transmission, that would be great. Thanks for any input.

Did you try a 10lb slide hammer with a cv axle puller?

Thanks for the reply.

And no we haven't tried that. I will have to see about getting one. Did that work for you or did you not have this problem?

I'm not sure you can get them out.
I just received my OBX unit and read a post about tapering the gears.
So I got out the Dremel and worked a bit to do that.
I thought I had enough done so in a moment of inspiration I installed a gear on to an old axle and discovered I had not done enough.
I ultimately had to cut the axle stub off and drive the piece out reverse.
Did a bit more grinding and after trying it again had success with both gears.
Don't know what would have happened had I not read that post.
Good luck......................
Now my problem is holding the input shaft of the F23 to remove the retainer bolt on the secondary shaft to split the cases.
Re: OBX LSD How To

Put your clutch disc on the splines on the input shaft and use that to keep the trans from spinning while you loosen the other bolt.

Re: OBX LSD How To

Well,
I made a tool to hold the shaft and got the bolt off, split the case and took a peek inside.
There was the remnants of a washer (pieces) stuck to the magnet.
Not sure where it came from?
Took the OBX unit and set a bearing and placed it into the bell housing side.
Looks like there is that interference with the case issue, will have to grind on the case a bit.
Anyone know the pre-load speck for the diff?
The old 282 Getrage was .004" if I remember.
Re: OBX LSD How To

The washer remnants are likely from the Belleville washers behind the spider gears in the stock diff. Mine was the same way.

That eases my mind a bit.
They did look like there was a lot of thrust wear on them so I would guess you are right.
How did you get your pre load on the bearings?

Alright so…

To get the tranny out we decided to just take the subframe off, disconnect the power steering, engine mount, etc.. and it worked!

We tried a 5 lb slide hammer along with the axle puller and it didn't work. I guess its time to move on to trying to take the tranny apart…

Thanks for all the help everyone!
