Automatic fluid level

1998 cavalier z-24 convertible with the quad 4 and 4 speed auto. Does it need special fluid of any Mercon III or higher?
I am sure this has been asked but I am to understand you warm car then shift through all gears then remove level bolt from side of transmission with car running on level ground if fluid runs out your good if not add through vent on top till it does. I am sure this has been addressed before but this is the first car I have had that didn't have a dipstick.

All you need is mercon 3 and car doesn't have to be running or shifted through gears just fill till it comes out hole and your good. I usually run some Lucas transmission oil in older cars.
