4t-40-E transmission
Friday, March 04, 2016 9:56 AM
So, I have a 2004 cavalier ls sport with the 4 speed automatic ant the transmission is going out. I read online that the 4t40 had 3 different sprocket sizes. I need a new transmission and found a rolled 2003 cavalier ls and I was wondering if it hat the same transmission as my 04 ls sport does or if id need to change the sprocket sizes in the transmission first.

I'm pretty certain all 4 speed tranny's from a jbody had the same gearing. Should just be able to swap tranny's.

Wikipedia says there were multiple gear ratios in the 4T403 trannys, "The final drive ratio can vary depending on the cars curb weight and engine power output. 3.91, 3.63, 3.29, 3.05, 3.69, and 3.42 are all of the available ratios used in the 4T40 (and 4T45) transmission; Made possible by using combinations selected from 3 different sprocket combinations (32/38, 35/35, 33/37) and 2 differentials (3.29, 3.05). There are multiple different 4T40es. You can swap everything around. The main differences are the bell housings.

Hi All,

I'm in a position where the final drive is currently 3.91 on my 4T40E's. As i'm using these transmissions in a car with smaller diameter wheels this final drive is a bit too short for what is needed but have so far been unable to find any supplier in the UK, US or Canada that can provide the 35\35 chain drive sprockets which would change the final drive to my ideal 3.26.

Does anyone know of any supplier that may be able to provide the 35\35 chain drive sprockets (don't mind if they are used items)?

Being located in the UK would rather not have to purchase 2 complete used transmissions just for the sprockets due to the shipping costs involved.

Many Thanks,
Mike

I would steel the chain and sprockets from a cobalt. Would be the easiest to find. I fairly certain that the drive sprockets out of a 4T45E would fit in a 4T40E.

There are 2 different heights of gears. 16.58mm and19.70mm. If you give me the dimension you would need I will see if I might have good used ones. Let me know.
