Shifter Went Limp.. Help
Monday, May 07, 2007 4:58 AM
I own a 99 Z-24 with 166,000 miles on it. The other day I was shifiting into third and all of a sudden it felt like my shifter broke and then just went limp. The shifter goes everywhere but dose not go into gear. I took it to mechanic and was told I needed a whole new tranny that would cost about $2500. Then I took it too a tranny guy and he says it is in the shifter and it would cost $259 to fix. Has this happend to anyone else? The car is tck in third gear but the stick won't let you change the gear.

It is your shifter cables (more thah likely) take your console out and make sure the cables are connected. If they are then they are bad. I had this happen on my 97 Z24. I got stuck in 3 gear, then it got to where I only had 1,3,5 gears. Common problem with a 95-99 5 speed. The cables cost about $250 from the dealer.

Ya the same thing happened to a buddy of mine last year. The plastic clip that holds the cable to the transmission linkage broken. He just wrapped it back on with wire and is still driving it like that today. This is by no means the right way to do it so you'll probably want to pick yourself up a new cable
