New to the hydraulic clutch world

Can someone fill me in on how the hydraulic clutch should feel. Does the pedal behave the same way as a brake pedal, going down roughly half way and getting hard? I've heard that its possible for a slave cylinder/hydraulic throwout bearing to extend too far and blow out. Can this happen when everything is right? I am using an ecotec and a F23 in a project vehicle and want to make sure I don't ruin the throwout bearing.

The pedal should go all the way down if you're using the matching master cylinder. If your master cylinder moves more fluid per stroke, it would only go part way, less fluid and the clutch may not fully disengage. See this thread: http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=41&i=47961&t=47961 . These seem to finicky SOBs, good luck!
