trans done?
Wednesday, August 22, 2012 9:07 AM
Driving to work this week and noticed 4th hear started rocking back and forth but stayed in. When I shifted to second it wouldn't stay in and popped out of gear.
Looked when I got to work and it looks like the teams is leaking, it won't even go into second now at all.
1,3,5,R are able to be engaged but it'll fight me at times in 1,3,5.

Help me Obi-wan, is there any hope?

It could be the shifter cables. They have been known to stretch.

When I had my 97 mine stretched and I had only 1,3,5.

So I survived the 248km drive home.
So here's the full details .... I can grab 1, 3, 5, and 4 th. 2nd is unable to be used. If I shift into 4th it locks out 1,3,5 and requires a stop and elbow grease to get back into 1st. Then 3,5 will grind a bit for the first few shifts. 3rd is starting to rock with load like it's going to pop out of gear ( not as bad as 4th does though).
There is a whining present in 1,3 but not in 5. Reverse works fine throughout.

And the clutch was starting to slip near the end ... But the trans is no longer leaking (it's full of 5w30 syn I had to use to get me home.

Still possible it's just the cables?

I would try shifting the car into all gears, but not using the shifter, and doing it at the tranny.

OK, I'll give it a shot ... would be great if that's all it was.

Well, couldn't get it to pop into second no matter what I did ... even tried a pry bar on the shift mechanism ... it's not the cables that's for sure. Well, that was a short run. I guess it did it's job though
(gave me the time to finish the lift on my Cherokee). Wish it would have lasted longer ... but I'm having no luck finding a trans for it.
