17x8 Too Wide?
Tuesday, October 11, 2005 7:06 AM
Ive been looking around for rims and tires, and i was helped out by the people in my other post .

I have Tein Coilovers halfway down in the front, an eibach camber kit , and i want to get these rims but there only in 17x8. Is that too wide? Wont i have some rubbing with the wheel turned most of the way?

Any help would be appreciated , thanks .

8" is ok wide. what is the offset on the rims? i would say to go w/ a 215 tire also instead of a 225. the 215 is a tad smaller so that may help

Is that going to be that much smaller because i had 205/40 17s and they were horrible.

i beleive the offset is 35 on the Fliks.

My rims (as seen in my sig) are 18"x8" and I have no clearance problems though I do not know the offset.

I know , it was a real quick thing i needed tires badly and thats all i could find cheap.

So the 225/45/17s is a little to big, go with the 215's?

no their both correct tire sizes. the 215 just has a smaller side way by 10mm hence the 225 and the 215. if your worried about rubbing get the 215. that what i had on my 17s and they were fine. granted i was running 17x7 though

thats what im running but mine are only 7.5" wide. i have no problem w/ that tire size

The first number of the tire size is the width of the tire in milimeters....for example, a 215/35/17 would be 215mm wide, 35 series sidewall, and 17" inner diameter.

215mm is 8.4 inches wide
225mm is 8.8 inches wide

either way you look at it, the 8" rim is still not as wide as the tire that plenty of people have running fine. So you should be fine unless my logic is seriously flawed. But as far as I can see, it's the tire width that is the limiting factor not the rim width since the rim width is still smaller than the tire width, and 215's and 225's work just fine.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but does anyone know if 17x8" 235/45/17 tires would work.
235 would be 9.25" in width.

Forgot to mention the offset is +45

Strat81 runs 17x8 35mm offset with 255s on them.

you may be able to get away with a +45 offset depending on what you are dropped on. I know with the tein coilovers and a 245, i was 1-2 mm away from the spring perch. The 255's needed spacers to work in the front. If you are on a traditional strut/spring combo, you may be ok as the lower spring perch should be a bit higher up on the shock body.

I have Koni reds on Eibachs sport lines. Lowered maybe 2"? I can get some Acura TL type S wheels, set of 4 with tires for $800. I've always like those gunmetal wheels, but my current motegi 18" wheels look terrible, and worse, are bent. Just looking to get something a little better, on cheap. I think I'm ready for a slightly less harsh ride, than my 18", around the huge pot holes of Washington, D.C.

I have 235 and they do rub without spacers, I'm also lowered a bit. Can't remember offset but 225 is what most ppl are running
