Which is lighter steel 14"/tire or 16" alloy Z24?
Monday, January 21, 2013 1:14 PM
I have been browsing this subject from google to here and I cannot find the answer. I have the 14"s with hubcaps on a '01 cavalier. The tires are getting bald. I would like to get a set of Z24 16" or any of the 16" stock Jbody rims and tires....but not if the combo is heavier. This is my second cavalier and it has been very reliable. I had a srt4 and the ball joints went bad with 60k. I think the heavier the wheel/tire the more suspension wear and tear.

95-99s z24 wheels are heavier than 14s. I believe the weights have been posted here a few times. I'll look them up if I get time.

It is probably so small not worth the handling decrease. Also moot ball joints are usually junk check out other brands there were a lot of recalls for them falling apart and causing accidents.

2000 Z24 16" wheels with uniroyal tiger paws 205 55 16 weigh 38lbs, 14" steelies with 205 75 14 winterforces weigh 39.5lbs
14" steelies with the stock size may weigh less? not sure....

I like the ride of the 16s, not to harsh on bumps and still all around good handling, the tiger paws are garbage though, they are getting replaced in the spring.

Thanks guys for all the info. Enforcer, the 16" wheels themselves are heavier than the 14" steelies? Rick, the combination rim/tire with the 16"s are a little lighter though? Rob, I didn't know that about the Moogs, I think that is the brand I just put on my truck. Now which 16" to choose since all the stock ones will fit?

the 16s are lighter than my oversized winter tires, yes, the 14s with stock size(not sure what it is 185/70 or 195/70 i think?) might be lighter than 16" combo but i doubt it will be by much. I dont think you will notice the 1-2lb differance compared to the better handling the 16s will have.

16" rims and tires are heaver than 14" rims and tires.

16's will not wear our any components faster than 14's would.

Just happen to have both sizes sitting in my garage. Both have about 25% tread and are ordinary type tires. I used the extremely accurate and scientific method of the bathroom scale.

14" stock steel wheels with 195/70-14 weighs 35.5#
16" Z24 5 spoke wheels with 205/55 - 16 weighs 34.0#

From experience with both:
1. there is a limited number of choices for tires with the 14" wheels and performance tires are not available as far as I've seen.
2. the cornering capability of 16" tires is significantly improved over 14"
3. the cost difference is only about $2 higher per tire (at Discount Tires) for the 16"
4. I have had both on the same car and there is no perceptible difference in MPG

As you will likely assume, I'll be going with 16". I'm saving up my $ for some Hankooks.

hope it helps,

Dennis

Thanks MasterFlight, that is the exact info I was looking for, I used your scientific myself when I weighed out 3 sets of rim/tires for my SRT-4. Enforcer, suspension wear is my #1 concern with the wheel/tire combo. Will be going with some 16"s!

Also the 95-99 z wheels are lighter than the 00+ wheels. I think it was brad Wheeler said when he was swapping rims on his silver z.

Have a nice day.
