I also found a sunfire clockspring with radio controls on rockauto. its expensive, but worth it IMO (especially since I can't find them anywhere.. I may try a dealer to see if they are any cheaper). Once I get that to replace my existing clockspring, I will be able to hook up the radio controls on the cobalt steering wheel using an interface for my alpine headunit.
one downside to hooking the airbag up, is you need the connector from the cobalt clockspring. I'm currently sourcing the connector manufacture and part number.. but luckily, the GM clockspring for the cobalt isn't that expensive ($50), so I'm buying the entire assembly to hopefully be able to de-pin the connector and put it on the jbody clockspring so it will hook up to stage 1 of the cobalt airbag.

whats the differences in steering columns from 95-99 to 00-03.5 to 03.5-05?
|
|
|
|
82-mid 03 are the same shaft
03.5+ different shaft
Want hub spacers? Shoot me a PM.

|

So if I am reading this right my 97 column will work for this swap?
|
|
|
|
No, this swap is for 03.5+ cars.
You would need an 03.5+ column swap to use this wheel.

that picture wasn't taken from your 97 it has the 2000+ cluster, radio dash and key fob
and that wheel wont bolt onto a 97 column either
so i'm saying thats not from your 97

thanks man!
the cluster is a one-off from www.blackcatcustom.com
its been a long time, but the guy who helped me out was alex. super cool dude to work with.
I paid almost $300 for the custom gauge face, illumination and re-scaled speedometer. idk if alex will or could do another tach swap cluster but CALL him up and ask!
tell him Pj sent you

oh god... totally agreed. although, im not a fan of how badly the 95-02 wheels deteriorate and wear down but im loving my toyo "leather" wrapped wheel. looks good and has absolutely no signs of that dreaded 'worn the ef out' look most 95-02 wheels get.
pj, that wheel really does look great in there.
a bit OT but still some what on topic... this sunfire clock spring... what if one simply wanted to upgrade a cavalier wheel with the sunfire radio controls, would i just need the fire clock spring and the control unit with the aftermarket interface unit then viola, done dealy and works? if so that would be bad ass. ive always liked the fire radio controls and wanted them in my cavalier....

its very possible not sure how nice the fit button will mount tho the Cav steering wheel but definatl worth a shot for what it would cost at a wrecker i say do it if it doesn't work right you wont be out much

A *bit* off topic? More like a lot off topic Brad!
That topic has been gone over ad nauseum in the electronics forum. And no they won't fit well under the cav's airbag cover, not to mention there isn't even provision to bolt them up there like there is on the GT wheel.
PJ - you said you're going to hook up an aftermarket interface to the new clockspring and controls - are you thinking something like a PESWIX unit?
