cut shifter and shift boot

just got around to cuting down my automatic shifter and modifying a shift boot on to it. did not want to work at first but change few things here and there and here is the outcome. just need to find the right shift knob now to go with it

started out like this

then became this

then got shortened to this

now looks like this just need a good shift knob

Nice, this is in my plan real soon. So you have a manual console that you used now? Or did you cut up your auto one?

Also, any steps on cutting down the 'shaft'? Do you also have to cut down the yellow stick thing?

i should have bought the top part of a manual console. actually though i took my console off and then modified the shift boot. a screwed the boot inside of the console in order to cover all open gaps to not be visible. i used a dremel to cut down my shifter about 1.5 inches. do not cut through the yellow part. cut the bar and wait for yellow til the end.

u should get the rubber trim piece on there that goes around the opening. looks really unfinshed without it. u should still ahve it, came on the automatics.

david. if you cut off 1" of metal rod. then you cut off 1" of the yellow plastic piece. and as said above use a dremel. cut around the rod without cutting the yellow piece. when you pull your shift knob off youlle notice the yellow rod sits about a 1/4" higher then the rod. so when you cut the rod you want to make sure u cut the yello piece so it still sits at that same height above the rod.

manual and automatic consoles are exactly the same. yours should look no diffrent now. or do you mean it looks weird becaue of the boot now?

I think he was being sarcastic. I'm pretty sure everyone knows you can't decrease the throw of an automatic trans.

Im heading to the yard tomorrow to hopefully find a sunfire manual console.

I tooke my console off yesterday and damn it looks tough to cut through the metal without cutting the plastic stick. Any tips? lol

Thanks Mike, ill just try the pipe cutter. Its only 4 bucks at Sears, cheaper than the dremel blades that I would need to buy. Plus I don't wanna switchout shifter assemblies lol

Just remember how ever much you take off the outer sleeve. Take that much off the inner rod.
