^^^ I would go do that but the switches are 5$ a piece and since i don't need one, i wont be paying 40$ for switches.
There is one small problem with that though. When the shifter moves back, it also moves down. Thats the problem i came into when doing it the other way.

^Mount the magnet up higher, (move the shifter all the way back and mount it flush with the plastice base. It doesnt need to line up exactly to trip the switch.

^^^ on that site it says that the circuit is closed when the magnets are together. and open when they arent together. so wouldnt that mean that as the shifter went down/back that it would close the light that you are on, leaving all other lights open and on?

or you just do the opposite so only the one light would be open

i still dont see how you g/f would wreck your auto tranny even if she cudnt see which one
i mean honestly just tell her to not press the button when wanting to go forward and your golden
and either way im sure she'd realize pretty quick when the car isnt shifting and the revs are just soaring

ok, here's my question, the sunfire cluster I took apart seems to have spots for leds to indicate the gear.

and places in the gauge housing for the indicators to shine through

does anyone know what chevy gauge has the indicators there, or... if an LED was put there, would it light up? I will be testing this in my car and I hope I don't permanently damage anything lol. if nothing else, this is a ready made spot to wire the indicators into the stock cluster.

Good find. I would use a multimeter to find the voltage going over those "leads" and then go get an appropriate LED and solder it in there. I assume that would work.
What year cluster is that???
