Need idea on how to mount LEDs in vents...
Monday, May 15, 2006 2:09 PM
Hello!

I just received 20 hyperbright white and 20 hyperbright blue LEDs today, I plan on mounting them that way:

-4 blue in each vents (3V each, so 12V total)
-4 blue in the top vent
-8 white each side under dash
-4 white to replace the bulb #194 in the dome light

My question is, does anyone have idea on how to mount 4 LEDs in each vent? I was thinking about a small plastic circle, which I'd drill tiny holes (8 x 1/16") to pass the connectors through, then glue the LEDs on the plastic, but I'm not sure yet.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Thx a lot,

Blue01GT

yea just drill small holes in the vent plastic and glue the leds in there

Yeah, just read that topic:

Less complicated than anything else!

Keep ideas coming, we never know...

Thx again,

If they are 5mm, just use a a 3/16" drill bit, which is only .09" smaller than 5mm, makes for a nice tight fit without having to silicone.

Also, I recommend using this site for resistor calculations (yes, you will need them for the 3v LEDs). Use 13.8v as the source voltage.

There is a flaw on this site where it shows the resistor on the negative side of the series. It is supposed to be on the positive side.

thx a lot for your help!

But what if I plug 4 LEDs in serie? (3V x 4 = 12volts...)

I mean, I don't think I'll have to use resistors for 4 3v LEDs in serie, am I wrong?

i ran in series and haven't had problems

but i've also done parralel...its all good imo

You should use a resistor. If 3v is the max that each LED can handle, then you are overdriving them, which will do 2 things -- 1) change the color output, 2) drastically shorten the lifespan. It won't be much of one (only 68 ohms).

Just head to your local Radio Shack and get a pack of 68 ohm, 1/4W resistors. It's a pack of 5, which should be what you need.

and you use one 68ohm ¼w resistor for 4 leds, or for each one?

Thx again, very helpfull people on here

1 resistor for the series, except it goes on the positive side of the series, not the neg as shown below.
