Well it finally happened. The TVS ended up destroying 2 items on the car. There is no saving them, completely gone.

Had ya worried, didn't I? 2 new Hankook V12s are already on the car and it should get a fresh inspection sticker tomorrow. I am wanting to "upgrade" to an AEM Uego wideband(I hate the LC-1 I have now) before winter and have Oldskool retune the car on the stock 3.1" pulley(I have an aftermarket 3.3" on it now).

Kyle, have you taken it to the dyno with the tvs yet?

You really tightened up my sphincter there. Had me really scared :/

I did have it on the dyno last year. According to the dyno it made 220whp, but the tailpipe wideband they used said that the AFRs were "off the cart" rich(it couldnt read richer than 10.5:1). The butt dyno says more like 240-250whp. The last tuning datalogs that Oldskool has says the car should be around mid to high 11s AFRs and the timing is very conservative. We do know that I do have room with my current fuel system that I can run the 3.1" pulley without changing anything.

Bye Bye junk.

AEM is installed. AFRs are pegged at 10:1 at WOT in boost. They are suppose to be at ~11.5:1 according to the LC-1. I'll be meeting up with Oldskool tomorrow to retune, but until then I leaned the car out mechanically(If you catch my drift)...

Lol. Been there. Tune it with air!!

Loving the rims. Where'd you get 'em? They look really nice on that car. I'm currently looking into getting rims for my car. Might have to pick up four of those.

My profile for the cav is always up to date. They are 5Zigen Pro-Racer GN+ in 18x7.5 35mm offset. I am pretty sure Drag makes a cheaper knock off.

I started the day with only making 5-9psi do to the belt slipping. Once I arrived I put my ZZP adjustable tensioner to good use and fixed that. I am now seeing 17psi at redline with the 3.1. Quick test drive showed that the car didn't like the added boost and started breaking up around 5200rpms and 15psi(still pegged at 10:1AFRs). I pulled the spark plugs and found that the gap was off so I regapped them back down to .34-.35. That fixed that issue. Oldskool had to PULL fuel to get the AFRs back to high 10s/low11s. When he orginally tuned it after I installed the Harrop he had to pull fuel. Timing was set to something like 15*. I think my IDC is still around 75%. I always prefer to sacrifice alittle power to ensure that I can beat the piss out of it safely. The pulley swap and retune really woke the car up.

Oh and the car was back to the original 7 minute flashes.

I understand wanting safety, but high 10's/low 11's is stupid crazy. The ecotec seems to like as high as 12.2's. So if tuned for 11.7-11.9 you have plenty of room and safety.

While I understand and respect your point, remember this is 17 psi from a roots blower. It was about 80-85*F ambient when we were tuning, and post blower temps were hitting north of 140-150*F. My point of leaving it in the low 11s midrange trailing to high tens at redline is a point of safety on a long time boosted stock L61, as well as the fact the when the temps drop in fall/winter here, these set ups tend to go leaner. When ambient temps are around 40*F or below, I bet his afrs are high 11s, hopefully not much leaner. It's funny when people dyno forced induction cars, the small power gained by leaning from say 11.5 to 12.5 is really not worth it to run on the ragged edge of safety. The other consideration is trying to get the car to take more advance. Even at 11:1 flat, it would not take much extra advance at full boost in the midrange over the previous conservative tune.

That said, if this was a turbo car, I'd totally be on board with leaning it to 12.0:1 if the owner wishes.

A cobalt guy I kind of know is also running a Harrop on his LSJ. He is tuned to 12.5:1 with LOTS of meth and a 2.6 pulley. He has been that way for many years now. He sees 22-24 psi a lot.

When he had it on his cavalier it was tuned for 11.8:1 with a 2.8 pulley if I remember correctly. He was fairly rich, and you could see it when he took off from a stop. I have no idea how much meth or PSI he was seeing back then though.

You guys know a lot more than I do when if comes to tuning, but less than 11:5 is way to rich in my opinion. Most of the car guys I talk to a the drag strip with roots blowers try to stay between 11.5-12:1.

With all that being said. Kennebell recommends 11:1 for most applications.

I'd be okay with running it in the high 11s, but no leaner, and that would absolutely require that Kyle and I meet up to add fuel when the ambient temps are consistently below 40-50*F (which I'm totally fine with). Meth is a totally different animal. I ran my M62 L61 at 12.5:1 with NO heat exchanger on meth. Same with E85; pump gas knock/afr rules don't really apply.

At some point octane limits what you can do - if you turn boost up and it knocks, you either need to pull timing, go richer, or both. As we left it, it was a pretty steady 11.3-11.5 up to about 5500rpm, then trailed off into low 11s/high 10s.

That guide from KB makes an interesting point - they recommend an AFR for best street use, and note that higher octane is required to run leaner afrs. That's EXACTLY the issue we dealt with. Try to add timing and it @!#$s out 7-8* KR, even on low 11 afrs. I can't imagine the result if it was in the 12s lol.

Wow, Mike's link to KB's recommendations got me reading. Take a look at the "ignition timing/octane/boost tuning" section of their 4.6L sc tech tips. They tested only an 11whp gain going from 11:1 to 12.5:1, and that's on an sc v8. It would be much less on a 4 cylinder. IDK about you guys, but I'll shelf the couple whp and keep it from knocking, which by the way they strongly enforce to avoid at all costs.

Ryan, I tend to do a ton of research about everything. Glad I could help. I know most around here run 94 or 100 unleaded.

Most gas stations around here have 87/89/91/94. The drag strip and one station local has 100-114 at the pump.

I have found on the Ecotec and LD9 to knok when in the low 11's and 10's.

Me saying the Ecotec likes 12.2's doesn't mean I will run them all that way.

If it is a car I won see I usually target 11.7. That leaves room for the cooler temps.

I've also seen knocking on richer afrs, but on less aggressive set ups than this. An off the shelf M62 L61 can certainly run high 11 afrs, even pullied down. When cylinder pressure and heat become a factor, a little extra fuel is not a bad thing, but a lack of fuel is a horrible thing. Again, the difference between 11.2 and 11.7 is so negligible in terms of horsepower, it's not even worth arguing.

Kyle, did you get a chance to drive the car last night or this morning? It was in the low 40s this morning, so I'm betting the car was in the high 11s at wide open, hopefully not too much leaner than that.

No. I only take the Volvo to and from work. The corbeaus are too nice for me to sit in them with my dirty work clothes. I should have the car out on either Friday, Saturday, or both days.

Late night parts run yielded great results.

I never put much thought into what I was going to do with the trans when I tossed the built engine in. One has a cracked case and the other a bad shift fork, so there should be one good F23 between them.

Better?

I have a few more things to look into and if they work out this could be a pretty epic year for the 03 and supercharged cavaliers in general.
