Home at last.
Tuesday, October 07, 2014 12:20 PM
So This past Sunday, an eco swapped Satch finally boarded the trailer and made it's way home.

Running the 99 body harness and fuel systen with the 04 engine harness and drive line. Seems to be getting along pretty well, aside from a theft lock headache that HPT should clear up.

Collecting the final maintenance parts (tie rods, hubs, brakes, fluids ect) then getting new plates for it.

Once that is taken care of I will run it around for a week or so before starting on an interior refresh. The car has seen better days for sure but surprisingly for sitting just about 4 years NO RUST!!!!

A huge huge thanks goes to my amazing girlfriend Jessie for kicking my ass back into gear on getting this car back together and donating her car to the cause.

I hate you guys lol

Yeah Mike, running the 99 cluster. Not sure what all will for sure work since it hasn't been on the road yet but seems everything but the tach is functional.

Talk to David "whitecavy / silvercavy" or Fetter about re-pinning to get the tach working.

I don't believe either of them actually used the factory tach, I know David had an aftermarket one for sure.

It's all a lie...Wayne is still "working" on that car for the next 20 years, haha!

I'm 90% sure David did get it working.

Hush James.

You're 90% wrong Mike I talked to him about it. I'm going to try and hit up Fetter see if he's got a minute to talk about it.

If that don't work, anyone know what pin in the 99 cluster is for the tach?

There is no "re-pinning" to get the tach working, because it's part of the UART datastream coming in from the ECM.
The reason the tach isn't working is because GM likes to arbitrarily change the format and location of various messages in the data stream. For example, the J-body data stream is 64 bytes. Bytes 12 and 13 in the 3rd Gen J-body are the MSB and LSB of the actual engine speed. However, in the 4th Gen F-body, it's a 68 byte data stream, and a single byte, #40, the cluster reads, then multiplies by 12.5 to get the actual RPM.

Why the hell didn't I think to ask you to begin with lol.

You're just gonna have to build me a cluster it seems.

Couldn't you just pull the signal from the ECU and then input it to the cluster for the tach?

I have a tach signal off the ECU for my shift light.

That might seem simple enough, but there is no tach input on the cluster. It looks for the information in the UART data stream. Using aftermarket components, you can do things like this, but not with the factory cluster. The 95-99 cluster accepts very minimal input outside of the UART signal. The 00+ clusters accept pretty much nothing but the 10,400 baud VPW signal.
