Finally got rid of the flaking clear on the roof
Wednesday, August 04, 2010 5:00 PM
The clear coat on the 98 has been coming off for several years now. I finally decided to do something. Shortly after I started to lay the vinyl the one damn cloud in the sky decided to spend about 30 minutes dumping on the car. Not sure if any damage was done to the adhesive. If it does not hold I will just peel it off and start over with a new piece eventually.

How it looked.

After a quick scuff to remove the loose crap.

Finally covered.

why not just scuff it really good, mask what needs masked, and get a few cans of automotive clear coat from ur local store. it would take a few coats, but would look good at the end if done right.

I dont have the proper set up to do it right. This is the easiest, and most practical short term fix. Eventually I would like to have the car repainted, but it needs a lot of work before that can happen.

if its good quality, the vinyl will stick for a long time. I saw a prelude the other day that was flat black, and had a "carbon fiber" hood roof and trunk. Well went to talk to the guy and he told me it was all a giant wrap/sticker. the flat black and carbon both. said it had been on for about 2 years with no issues.

The pics on the site that I ordered form looked to be more of a matte finish. If I decide I dont like it I can always get a new sheet of vinyl and redo it. For now I am happy with it, even with my one big screw up that has a "patch" over it just in case it didnt stick good enough.

I have the same problem. What would be the best grit to scuff it up?
