Going to court for neons.
Saturday, April 23, 2005 11:21 AM
So I was on my way to advance auto parts from wal-mart last night. I pass a sherrif going the opposite way. I go inside, get my oil/filter etc., dude that works there says "There's a county sherrif behind your car" so im like "Alright, it's probably for driving with my blue underbody lights on." I go outside, he asks me if i'm a volunteer firefighter. Since im not, I said no. He says "go get your lisence and have a seat." Mind you that he made me come up to his car in the pouring rain so im not really too happy about that.. He hands me my license and says "You're court date is May 26 and it's pretty sad when you have more lights on your car than I do."

So, my question is... if I he saw me, shouldn't he have stopped me right then for the lights not follow me a half mile and then stop me in the parking lot. And on the ticket it says it happened right in front of Wal-mart, when he really gave me the ticket in the parking lot and didn't pull me over when he saw the lights.

I'm going to court and i'm going to fight it because there is 2 cars in town with green lights on all the time, 2 or 3 cars with red lights, and 2 cars and motorcycles with blue lights and I'm the one that gets pulled over, nobody else. I've even talked to most of those people with lights and they've said they've never gotten pulled over for it..

Heck, i've even asked 5 cops, 2 were sherrifs and they've said all colors were ok as long as you can't see the bulb.

Maybe it's the car I drive, I don't know... But I think it's pretty stupid to pull someone over for lights.

doesnt matter how many other cars in your town have neon lights, he caught you, so lets focus on that. If he saw you passing walmart, then thats where the violation took place. If you want, you can fight where it took place and say it was at autozone, but that won't help. Honestly you can't fight a neon ticket. The main colors that piss off cops are red and blue because those are the colors of emergency vehicles. Green too, but seriously, any neons on the car. In wisconsin the only time you can have your neons on are if you are parked somewhere. Every cop can tell you something different. Some let things slide, others don't. It all depends on what mood the cop is in. Hell, I've had cops pull me over for my loud exhaust and bitch about it, others pull me over because they think it sounds cool. lol Good luck though, court sucks

Check the laws of your area, a cop can write you a ticket for anything, but it doesn't make it illegal. If it is illegal there is nothing you can do, if the law doesn't state it's illegal, you can argue it with a judge, but bring proof in writing.

he asked you if you were a volenteree firefighter because they are allowed to have blue lights on thier cars

you deserve the ticket and if you go to court you are just going to waste your time and money u could be making at work, just pay the ticket there is no way your getting out of it

don't feel so bad i have court monday for 99 in a 55. atleast yours really isn't a moving violation as much as it is a equiptment violation

I'm not going to court anymore, my girlfriend's uncle who is a sheriff got the ticket thrown out. He didn't give me a ticket, he gave me a summons to court. Oh well, all's well that ends well, I guess I did deserve the ticket. Oh well I don't drive with them on anymore.

hey look i dont know where you are but in texas when i have read the packages its says for off-road or show use only.. if your in a parking lot its off-road... no reason for a ticket

it doesn't matter where the cop issued the ticket, it matters where he saw the violation occur. from my understanding, he saw you driving on the streets with it. you're lucky you got that ticket thrown out.

Yeah the ticket was handed to him in a parking lot but the cop saw him driving down the road with them on if you read the original post. Neons are a waste of money. Buy something that makes your car fast, save looks for later!!!

I'm not sure what the law says where you are, but all lights are illegal here, but the cops don't care unless they are either blue or red because of the fact that only emergency vehicles have those lights.

So long as you can't see the bulb, I don't think you should have any issues. Check up on the law.

If you can see the bulbs, or any other illegal lights such as LED's on the car in illegal colours, then you're probably SOL. And really... if you can see the neon bulbs, it probably looks like crap anyway.

I agree. I don't know the laws for every state, but I live in a small town in Pennsylvania and I work in New York City on weekends. I have nice interior neon setup in my 2003 sunfire, and currently looking to get an underbody kit, neon lit steering wheel, and a glowing spoiler, but I'd be pissed if I could never show it off, so I asked a pulled up to a local police officer one day and started asking him a bunch of legality questions about the neons. The officer told me that I am allowed to have neon lights installed on my vehicle and even have them on... as long as I'm not driving my car. He said as long as I am in a parked vehicle (preferably in a parking lot type area because he said some cops will be d*cks...). I never drive with my neons running... Ok well occassionally I might feel a bit daring, and usually only to show off to a passing car since I have ALL my neons individually hooked up with switchs to easily turn them on and off at will. But I've had my neons flashing to my music while was sitting at a gas station and had cops even pull up next to me to go into the rest stop without saying anying to me. If I ever got a ticket for neons while I was in a parking lot or parked somewhere I would probably fight it as long as I could prove it, but the law has a tendancey to lie in court, A LOT. And I've learned that no matter what you say even if you're in the right, that what an officer says in court is what the judge is gonna believe, not you.
Now when I'm in New York City I don't dare turn the lights on because cops in NYC can be pricks sometimes and the laws restrick all neons there from my understanding. Not that you can see any of the bulbs anyway in my car, but even if they did I don't worry about it too much as long as they aren't on. From my understanding I won't get in trouble for having them installed on my car because I am a Pennsylvania citizen and not a New York City local. For instance New Yorkers are required to have a front end license plate, but in PA it's not required, so my front end is bare. Now if I was a New Yorker and drove around without it they would have grounds to fine me.

In Indiana you can not have blue (volunteer firefighter) or green (EMT) any place on your vehicle or sometimes (if they get grouchy) on the inside visable to the outside. In addition, you can't have any red lights visable from the front center of the vehicle.

Blacklights have often been ticketed as blue, some cops are color blind and they look 'blue' shining on white black light reactive items.

flashing or strobing lights not used for turning indications or as "hazard" lights can be considered a "distraction" to other drivers.

on a side note, LCD screens in the front seat not used for navigation aren't good either.

from my understanding by DOT as long as they dont see the bulbs your ok but if you can then busted.. Besides he should have stopped you in the road when he saw you not wait til you go in then stop and get you later.. thats BS. but hey all that matters is that you got it dropped.

as some have mentioned most cops wont bother w/it unless you can actual see the bulb itsself, that seems to be the deciding line MOST of the time. alot has to do w/the cops mood and if its an old timer who doesnt like fixed up cars. i was pulled over cause the cop didnt notice my license plate on the front(another story) well ihad my blue neons PULSING at the time i was DRIVING on the highway. he just said " you should take care of the L/plate since you have the flashing neons it brings attention to your car" then i was on my way. that all he said to me about the neons.

I have some experience in this field. I've been pulled over for blue and received a $45 ticket in Florida... I've driven with my green underbodies next to several cops all the time in Florida and Georgia. They haven't said boo about the green, and when i was pulled over for blue they told me there that blue and red were only colors. Just pay the $45 you're wasting your time.

I had neon winshield washers and they were blue and anytime i got pulled over it was always by a dick rookie. Its something that rookies bother with due to the fact that they get @!#$ locations and will pull u over for anything to make there quota or whatever u want to call it. Just face it unless u disable it or install a swtich to have them on while ur parked. Thats what i did with my car i have switches installed for my exterior neons so that i can turn them on and off when im parked.

Anyone from MN or WI (or anyone who thinks their laws may be similar) there is an old post in the North Central Regional Forum regarding exterior and interior lighting. I emailed the MN Attorney General's office and got a direct answer frm there regarding both. To sum it up for MN... Illegal.

But again, depends on the cop.

I got pulled over once with underbodies and neons...

Cop: "Pretty neat set up you got there."
Me: "Yep."
C: "Those are illegal ya know."
M: "Yeah..." *Frown*
C: "And were those blue lights in the rear there strobing back and forth?"
M: "Yes."
C: "Interesting... Why don't you shut 'em all of and come out here for a minute."
M: *Shuts stuff off and steps out of car*
Both: *Walk to squad car*
C: *Sits in car* "See I got all these lights here." *Plays with switches*
M: "Cool"
C: "Yeah, and I can change the way these ones go. And heres the alley lights"
M: "Tahts pretty neat"

All said and done... he liked my set up and I got off squeaky clean

Then, on another occasion...

C: "Those lights under your car are illegal."
M: "Yeah"
C: "Those subs are illegal." *Points to subs visible through my back seat*
M: "Only if I have them on and am breaking noise ordinence".
C: "I'm pretty sure you did"
M: "You can't prove it."
C: "Those neons under your dash there are illegal too"
M: "Nope, the light source isnt directly visible from outside the car, and they are below my windows."
C: "No. They're illegal."
M: "Officier, I look into the law before I break it, I know these are not illegal"
C: "You better look again. Did you know driving with your dome light on is illegal?"
M: "Yes, because its above my windows, these are below my windows"
C: (Now aggrivated) "ANY light inside the car is illegal"
M: "Ummm... That car just drove by, it had lights behind its gauges... call backup"
C: "Dont get smart with me."
M: "But there's lightis inside the car, they must be illegal."

Long story short... Im still waiting for my court date to get my license back.

None the less... all depends on the cop, but it is technically illegal.
