Ecotec Conversion
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 3:19 PM
I have a 97 z24 and i am doing a conversion to a 03 ecotec, i just had a few questions before starting, i was wondering if i would need all new cable and convert the shifter and everything from the 97 to a 03, i am looking to install a short shifter when doing this and it is so much easier/cheaper to find a short shifter for 03 and up compared to the 97 gen. but if i did install a 03 short shifter would i then need to change all the cables and or the casing for the shifter, sorry if this is a dumb/obvious questions or if this is already posted on here.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Take it this way....strip your car to the shell and swap everything from the 03-up car......its a big job..

everything needs to go... shifter, shifter cables, every piece of wiring, bcm, gas tank, gas lines, evap moved to the back, just to name a few, and don't forget the cutting off the old tranny mounts off the frame and welding on the new ones.
but to answer your question direct...Yes, short shifter or not you HAVE to change to a 00-05 shifter and cables. Look for a how to some where or check out our "eco vert" thread in photos in videos. we just did the swap.

The search button is your friend, and will not get you "douche" comments.

Heres the deal again... for the 10000000+ time in the past week alone

the 2.4 motor in your Z24 and the eco motor are so similar, the statement 2.4 = ECO makes a bit of sense ... they are very similar in terms of performance and potential. they are similar in fuel economy, they are similar in maintenance requirements and reliability... so swapping from one to the other is really not worth the money involved...

To run any motor 2000 and later in any J prior to 1999 (1999 is an oddball transition year), you will need to rewire the entire car. you'll need motor, F23 Getrag trans and trans mounts (which will need to be welded), or the automatic trans, you'll need ECU, engine harness, dash harness, you'll need all the engine accessories, you'll need the radio, the gauge cluster, a Body Control Module (BCM), shifter, cables, gas tank, fuel pump... etc etc... you need an entire donor car to do this.

and for all of this, you will lose 10 WHP Stock...

cant you just have the pcm flashed to by pass the vats and not have to install the bcm ?

Not yet. The Eco PCM needs to see input from the BCM.

Epicness is coming. Are you ready?
