Hey upon bringing my z24 back to my friends house the motor spun a bearing and threw 2 rods im not worried about it the engine because of previous owner the engine was junk. well im gonna rebuild my motor and i have several blocks lined up but i see that there is a 2.4 DOHC long block and a 2.4 DOHC short block. now what is the difference between the two? i mean the short block said its from 96 - 01 im new to this thing and i honestly have no clue whats the differences between the long and short block are.

this is the short block

some other 2.4 blocks

so tell what is the difference between the 3 or are they the same because if they are then im gonna purchase one tonight

LOL short block is just the block and rotating Assembly. Long block is basically an engine ready to be bolted in. I recommend maybe you go to a shop to get your engine built if you don't know the difference. Next thing we know you'll be asking if you can install RX-7 pistons for lower boost...

i mean i have rebuilt like 3 engines a chrysler 383 440 and a slant 6 i only know those motors and i kno a block is a block with those types of engines. so basically what your saying is that an unassmbled ld9 is a short block and when the motor is assembled its a long block?

if you have built v8s that you should know that a short block has no heads and a long block does. Why not just buy a local 2.4 if that's what you want and tear it down. I can find them in my area for under 200$

What year is your car? A medium block might be your best option.

Sarcasm aside, this is a good question. There are specific differences between the 96-98 and the 99-02 LD9. Most notably, the knock sensor and the presence of an EGR for the 96-98 will cause you some headaches with the PCM.

Don't know which was funnier, the Gallo 24/12 or the 2JZ
