First trip out to the track this year!
Thursday, May 05, 2005 11:56 AM
Went out to US131/Martin last night, I was a little unprepared as it was a last minute decision, but I still chose to go and had a blast.

The car was in full street trim, 1/2 tank of gas, and I left the tire pressure alone, the car is also running extremely RICH as I have no second o2 sensor, and have yet to buy a sim.

I made around 5 passes, and the best I pulled was a 15.3653 @ 86.53 out, with a 60ft of 2.3322. I'm beyond pleased as I finally got a nice launching technique down and I feel the car better than ever on the track, hell I know I still have room for improvement, but they closed the staging lanes too fast for me . I took a Probe & an MX6 both with KLZE's, and this Civic running a 55 shot of Zex only ran a 15.0 beside me. I also hung with a beat turbo'd CRX, you could tell it had seen better days.

A few new pics-

Sweet! Good to see you are getting the hang of launching the car. Takes a while, but once you learn how your car reacts, its pretty easy to improve.

I would have gone out there but I was stuck at work till 8

Oh well, I will hopefully be back out at the track next week.

Just a FYI, this Saturday is the Xceed BBQ, bring whoever you want. I think it is posted on JBOM as well. Hope to see a lot of J's out there again this year!

Later,
Jeff

I was the fastest J out there thanks to you not showing up . You'd be amazed how many people know you, I was talking to AJ with the red Blizted Talon TSI and he randomly asked if I knew you, and he lives in K'zoo.

Sat. is my 21st bday party, sorry, the "group" over here will be attending that .

I get another ride this year though, right?

Are you sure your running rich? I run without a second oxygen sensor and no bad effects.

yeah, the second o2 only checks to make sure that the cat is working... it's the first o2 that has the ability to mess with fuel/timing

either way, looks like you had fun (as did i ) and good times

I've always been lead to believe that, until Todd (Protomec) corrected me regarding how much control the second o2 sensor has. Yes I'm positive I'm running rich, anybody who has driven behind can tell you that, hell I can smell raw fuel at idle, and when running WOT I blow a very nice amount of black, all of which my gas mileage also backs up, as it is suffering. This car has always ran rich, but ever since I've ran with no cat/no second o2 it's became rediculous. I've also been told my MPH shows I have a few tuning issues, which I do agree with on a certain level.

The o2 simulator should clear all of this up I hope.

Cody, I decided this fall I'm bringing out the ricer and pulling out my interior! You brought up a a very valid point about cleaning it, that I never realized, I don't know how I missed that. I've armoralled my dashpad everytime I've had it off, and with other pieces throughout my alarm install, guess I never thought about it.

I have a goal this year, and I hope I'll be able to make it this Fall, as I love running in the colder temps. I got all summer to prepare for it that way also. Maybe running rich could benefit me?

You say your getting the hang of launching it with a 2.33 60' time? You need some more "getting the hang of it", and you could be much better off.

You know the amount of ignorance on this site never ceases to amaze me....

I saw you posted, so I looked forward to tips and tricks, instead I get bull@!#$. Whatever, you're a veteran racer, I respect that, but this is my first time out this year, after only going out twice last year.

HAHA

That is great. Well the glory is yours

Yeah, I know or know of a LOT of DSM owners.

He prolly knows Jessica with a black DSM that I hang out with now and then. I think he followed her up to GR when she came to meet me and a few friends.

Yeah I had a guy from Muskegon talking to me out at our local hangout the past weekend and hes like yea I know about your car, I am like where are you from?

I get random people walking into my work and asking me how the car is treating me etc... im like who the hell are you?? It is kinda cool but also scary at the same time if ya know what I mean.

Yeah, you can get another ride for sure heh. I should be out at the JBOM BBQ again this year. Should I start making laps again? LOL

Ahh its all good fun.

But anyways, back on topic, 2.3 60ft is not the best, but just think, that is what I was running last season, got it down to 2.2's and now this year I am running 2.0 60 ft. Lots of learning and just trying new things. That is what the track is for and dont ever let anyone rip on you for trying or because you are not perfect at launching. Learning makes it fun and doing what other people say you cant makes it all the better.

So may times I have heard, why a Cavalier, no thats not possible, no that wont work, no a cavalier cannot do that. I have had people literally LAUGH in my face!! I always said why cant it? Look where that had put my car now... I say f-that and do what you gotta do to get where you want to be...

Jeff

Well J's are tuned rich from the factory. When running no cat (as I am as well) more un burnt gas does get out the back because of lack of cat., as well black smoke which can also be carbon.
Good luck with the O2 sim, I have one, and it does not work more than it does work.

Thanks for the wise words Jeff, well spoken! I honestly admire the work you put into your car and wish everyday I would have went the same route, it's great how many people know and respect you because of what you've done with a "Cavalier". Hell that's why people who you don't know, know you. I'll be looking forward to another lap to make me once again, beyond jealous .

Brandon (Cavfan1) is going to help me out this year I'm hoping, and I have a set goal by this fall, so we'll see where that goes.

Yeah I hear they're normally hit or miss , I think I may try one from ZZ performance who does a lot with GTP's locally....

For actually giving you a tip that you mistook for "bull@!#$". It was obvious, but I was trying to confirm your suspicion that that was really the only problem you needed to deal with at this time. Once you get that down, you'll be running high 14's, which as I'm sure you're aware, are pretty much the envy of most NA J-body owners. Now, after you get that launch technique down, try working on not becoming quite so defensive just because I write off the cuff. Now I know what the grumpy old man was talking about.

LOL. Nah, the way I read it was obviously opposite of the way you intended it. No big deal.

I know, the launch is where it counts in most cases, and I know I still have a lot of improving to do. I was just excited at the potential I have here, with really minor engine mods.

Thanks .

John, glad you've heard of them too, being they're 1.5 hours from me, that's awesome .

really good times man, if you could pull a 2.1 60' foot you would be real close, if not into the 14's

maybe run on stock wheels? might be lighter, and faster cuz of the smaller size

Shulte......is your rime and tire combo pretty light as it is right now? And also remember you didn't even lower your tire pressure which helps a good bit on launching. Did you take out any random dead weight in the car? Well anyway im seeing high 14s also! G*luck

Hey Joe, When i come home, i will let you have my O2 sim. It has worked great for my car and since i dont seem to be using it, you can have it. Its from caspers, and has always seemed to work for me, although i have had no suspition that it didn't worked so I never checked it. But when I come home and you still need one feel free to steal it from me
