Wednesday, June 22, 2005 7:05 PM
ok i finally went to the track for my first time so please don't make fun of me i ran a 2001 with the 2002 motor with only an intake and stock tires and wheels and springs and with subs in the back and every thing like i would on the street
the first run threw the 3RD i launched around 3000-3500RPM's and the fourth i launched around 4200RPM's i was getting allot of grip and i was only running 30PSI in the tires
and i was at the 1/8 mile track and it was 90 degree's out side
first run
R/T...1.087
60'...2.591
330..7.521
1/8...11.118
MPH...63.77
second
R/T...770
60...2.612
330...7.328
1/8...11.226
MPH...63.18
THIRD
R/T...649
60...2.643
330...7.336
1/8...11.230
MPH...63.29
FOURTH
R/T...977
60...2.456
330...6.973
1/8...10.790
MPH...64.45
so did i do good for basically a stock 2 door sunfire with the 2200 motor????

The 4th one seems o.k. for a 2200 though.

whoa whoa whoa........ first off, drop your tire pressure. Between 15-18 psi on a 55 series, add two psi for each size above that (ie: a 65 series would be 17-19, a 75 would be 19-22). Second, experiment with the clutch technique for the best launch.... RPM isn't nearly as important as how you feather the clutch. Let off the clutch fast enough not to bog the engine, and slow enough not to spin the tires. It takes practice, but you'll get it.

And don't ever let anyone tell you that the OHV isn't a good motor for racing.... most people just tend to ignore it, but its always the quiet, unassuming ones that do the most damage to twin-cam egos

Those 60' times suck hairy monkey nuts. But if you get those sorted out, you shouldn't be doing too bad.

I never have feathered my clutch on take off and I still get good 60 foot times. I just rev to around 4,000 rpms and pop the clutch. At least I don't think I feather it not sure now that i'm thinking about it.......I don't really know what I rev to.....I just listen to how my car sounds....and when it sounds like its too much I just go a little under that.

Blackcavygod.... Not to rag, so don't take this personally, but you get DECENT 60's. 2.3 could still use improvement. Popping the clutch just shocks the tires and the rest of the driveline and normally results in a bog-out or traction loss. Letting out the clutch as slowly as possible without bogging, and as fast as possible without spinning, is the best way to launch a car thats on normal street tires (consistent 2.1 60's and the guy who taught me how to do it can do 1.8 second 60's on normal street tires). Drag radials or slicks can be launched more aggressively than that, but i think justin is in the stock tire club with the rest of us.

Why are you running a this on an 1/8th? Your car is geared for the 1/4 mile.

Well, I don't think for your FIRST TIME, the times are that bad. They could be much much worse.

If I can get my car ready, I'm going this Tuesday for my first time myself.

But like everyone has said, practice. Work on your 60ft times, maybe a mod here or there, new plugs wouldn't hurt if they need to be replaced, or are getting close.

I'm replacing my plugs today at 52000 miles.

I've also been told NOT to spin my tires, i.e. dump the clutch at 4 grand or whatever.

I've been advised to feather the clutch until it grabs, once the clutch, and tires grab, to go WOT (wide open throttle)

Good luck with the car, the times, and race safely.

Nice effing times. You certainly did better than I did.

Keep practicing, and don't listen to anyone telling you that your times suck.

All it takes is practice, and mods

The biggest thing I learn my first night, is that launching on the street, and launching at the track are two entirely different things.

If I had to rate my traction on the street, on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the lowest, it's about a 4.

At the track with the same tires and same pressure, about an 8.

It's a HUGE difference.

So keep practicing, and kick ass at the track and make sure you show everyone that J bods aren't just for show.
