14.0 @ 105mph (with video)
Saturday, September 10, 2005 3:01 PM
Headed out to the track last night after a few months of down time getting the car ready.
This run was at 10 PSI. Stock tire(with hub cap) Tire pressure @ 29psi. Launch was at about 2900 rpm's. My launch still sucks and a 2.3 60 ft to go with it. The car should be well into the 13's as soon as I figure out how to launch it.

For anyone who wants to know how the focus did in the far lane..... 19.1 @ 68 mph

LOW 13 second trap speed. If you run the stock tires again, air them down to at least 20 psi and then launch at a higher RPM and drag the clutch out a little more.

Yeah, i decided to analyze your best slip versus my 13.6 run just to try and see where your biggest issue is.... and yes, its all in the first 1/8 mile

I'm almost 3 tenths ahead out of the hole, gaining to a full half second at the 330; (spinning into second? bogging? maybe just a sloppy/slow shift?), 6 tenths ahead at the 1/8, then you start catching up and at the 1000 ft i'm back down to a 5 tenths lead, and then at the 1/4 i'm only 4 tenths ahead.

Here's what I do to launch. The J-body gearing is different than my car, but I air my tires (bone stock Eagle RSA street tires) down to 15 psi. Spin them enough to just clean them off, then pull up to the line. Rev to about 3500. When its time to go, pull the clutch up slow enough not to shock the tires and break loose, and at the same time start leaning into the throttle. All this time you're modulating the keep the revs up enough not to bog but not being so agressive as to spin. It takes a lot of practice, but so far as I've seen its the best way to do things when your tires are inadequate. Its not like I'm blowing smoke here either, I'm cutting what most people consider drag radial-type 60' times on the same tires the car came with brand new.

My advice is to keep practicing with what you've got before upgrading to drag radials or slicks. Once you've improved and gotten your times down to 13.4 territory or so, then you're going to be at the limits of your tires, and its time to switch to something better. Its much better to gradually master the launch than to just jump into better tires. It really develops your driving skills and reflexes.

Thanks for the feedback guys and thanks for the in depth look Scarab. I know the car is capable of 13's, when I started this project, a 13 second (stock appearing j-body) was my goal. . Very close to achieving this goal and can't wait to raise the bar. I know others have their eco's in the 12's and someday I hope to join them I was planning on getting the Hahn port fueller and manifold next but maybe I will invest in some drag radials first. I'm still on stock internals so 10 PSI is my limit for now. I have tried lowering the tire pressure on the stock tire before I installed the turbo. I dropped down to 22 PSI. After a few runs I noticed a break in the sidewall. So I am hesitant to drop the tire pressure too low. We will see what the future brings for my cavy.

if you had a break in the sidewall there was definitely a problem with the tire to begin with. I regularly hit the track with two J's rocking stock (or cheaper and crappier than stock) tires, and they run 20 psi regularly with no issues.

Believe me when i say that mastering the car with the stock tires will help make you faster when you have DR's. It takes some time, but you don't want to be one of those guys with ridiculously high trap speeds and crappy ET's. Work on the part that counts!!

105 is actually good for high 12's on DR's if you can cut a 1.8 or 1.9 second 60' time.

Awesome car and set-up...

When I saw the video and saw the focus stick with you on the launch my head dropped, then I heard 2nd gear with a whistle, 3rd with a whistle, and the 14.0 run and said ahhhhhhh!

Thanks guys and yes thats Dragway 42! I live in Akron. I'm in the procces of getting a new suprise. Unfortunetly, it's going to keep the car down for the rest of this season. I might possibly run the car one more time in it's current state just to see 13's!.
