First time drag racing w/ Ecotec Turbo
Saturday, June 30, 2007 5:00 AM
Last night I went to my local track ( Island Dragway, Great Meadows, NJ ). First pass down I launched at 3000rpm and it came out ok....once the boost hit then it pulled !! I ran against a 04 Cobalt SS Supercharged w/ GM Performance Stage II for that first run and we were neck to neck the whole way down. I saw him run once before I lined up, he went 14.3 @ 100.

The only thing is for some reason, I was only running about 6.5 to 7psi of boost all night. Its usually 8psi.
I did five runs the best of were my first two. My first run was the '04 Cobalt SS and the second a '05 Scion TC.

The best part was catching everyone by surprise. The guy with the Cobalt had no idea it was Turbo.
These passes are all on the factory tires Goodyear RS-A P205/55R16 set @ 30psi.

First Pass
R/T ---- .534
60' ---- 2.343
Finish -- 14.375
MPH ---- 99.69

Second Pass
R/T ---- .590
60' ---- 2.228
Fininsh -- 14.332
MPH ---- 99.32

Nice run but, you get that reaction time down, you will get a better 60 ft mark, and I gaurantee a 13.9!!!! I would have loved to have seen my man with the cobalt's face!!!! PRICLESS................ Great job.

Watch out there nah!

Ignore ^^^ him. reaction time does not affect your 1/4 mile time. You could sit there for a week if need be, the clock starts when you move not when the light goes green

This is how every single time trial/test and tune/open to the public event I've ever seen has been run, during actual compitions yes reaction time matters but this wasn't a competition so again just take your time and work on getting your launch down befor eyou worry about reaction times.

What if they are working off a .500 tree? Then a R/T ---- .534 would be great right? Since it would be the same as .034 if using a .000 tree?

It was a .500 tree. For some reason on Friday nights they run it, what I don't understand is that this is Street Legal night.
They run .000 tree on Saturday Test and Tune. I'm very familiar with drag racing. I have over 100 runs with my Camaro and competed in a few bracket racing events.

well, your 60's aren't the greatest, but definitely not the worst i've seen.... try 15 psi in those rsa's and give em a good spin to clean them off before getting to the line. 60' times in my sig are on the same tires.

Your trap speed indicates you could get better times just by getting a better launch and possible shifting a little quicker too... What RPM are you shifting at, anyway? I know you V8 guys have a tendency to shift before redline because of the lower powerband, but these cars really do a lot better by shifting just before you hit the rev limiter.

the car definatly has a 13 second timeslip in it, you just need to bring it there. lower the tire pressure like scarab said. also, was it hot out?

I tried 3500rpm launch and it had bad wheel hop. I'm shifting the car at about 6300rpm. The temp was not to bad....low 80's...a little humid though. I've heard Island Dragway is also a slower track because of its elevation. I would like to go to Maple Grove (1 hour drive) or Atco (1 3/4 hour drive) on a colder day.

My goal is 14.0 @ 100....I'm thinking maybe a 63mm throttle body and 9psi is in my future.

I think you could hit your goal of 14 flat with what you got now. Practice with this turbo you got.
