7200rpm upgrades, Need some input
Monday, September 20, 2010 10:24 AM
Hey jbody, Im currently running a 04 cav dirt track car with an 2.2 ecotec. right now we are turning 7000rpm with all stock motor, of course we are not increasing hp but that is what i want to fix. We will b setting rev limiter to 7200 but we want to make sure the motor can handle that type of revs repeatedly. I know we need new cam (not sure which one yet) also lifters, springs, and we feel the need to upgrade the timing chain but im not sure, what you guys think I need to do to enable this great motor to rev to 7200 and not flatin out or break it? Thanks for advice jbody

Hey, new springs will be needed for sure as well as either a balance shaft delete kit or neutral balance shafts. They dont like to be spun more than 7000rpm, you could take your chances but if you are gonna be tearing it apart you might as well get it done.

Timing chain is good till pretty much any rpm, no worry about ever breaking it.

also might want to do the hardened oil gears also

Hardened gears are only necessary if you plan on hitting the RPM limiter often or are using a 2-step.

i agree with both things said def the balanced shafts, and i would reccomend oil pump gears to be safe. i have both for sale if you are interested. pm me if so..

7000rpm on a stock eco? and theres no mods? lol damn i must be use to old v8's cause i get a little sketchy pushing my stock eco past 4500.... but im not racing it. am i just over cautious? are they really built factory to handle those kind of rpm's day to day?
sorry about my ignorance im stil new to tuners cars.. lol wonder what it would take to put the flathead from my 47 merc in a cavi..lol

You could rev it to 7k daily, but plan on replacing bearings and rings a lot sooner then needed otherwise.

pulled mine out at 103K and it went into another car. 50K of that 103K was boosted.
