"Hey if the car costs MSRP $25K then it might be worth it, but if MSRP hits $40-45K before tax rebates, then there is no sense in buying this, unless you're a hippie."
I can't argue this point. It would be a yppie in the ,arket for it. Hippies don't have any money. They need tobuy these because they sold out on thier vvalues
Nickel metal hydride, lead acid.....are not appropriate for this use.
The guys dragging electric use capacitors and and self assembled li ion.
The package makes more sense to have a hydrogen fuel cell for the extended range and capasitors to hold the regenerative power. We would not need a huge infrastucture for Hydrogen because you would rarely use any as most peoples commute could be easily handled by the overnight charge. Also, on a small scale, hydroged is easily produced and could also be mass produced with north americas exceess power through the night.
Mr.Goodwrench-G.T. wrote:The range signifies how many times you go to a gasoline station. With the Volt you will have to go almost 4 times to reach the range of 1 tank on the Peugeot.
I love optimism that it will do 40 miles on a charge. GM's pinnacle of electric cars EV1 said with its lead acid batteries it can do 80miles when in real world miles it 45-60 miles, then with Nickel metal hydride the range was 150miles and real world it did 90-100miles. GM says Volt will do 40miles, so real world should be around 10-20 miles?
Again, misleading. Your definition of range must be reworded for this vehicle - range is how many times you go to a gas station if you drive nonstop and/or never plug the car in. If I get in the car and drive from Phoenix to Detroit, that definition of range will be absolutely true. But if used as it is intended - as a daily commuter, it flips the whole concept of range upside down. I use myself as a perfect example. If I owned this car, I estimate that I would have to fill up about once per year. My average round trip is currently less then 15 miles. I drive about 10,000 miles per year. Sure that Peugeot would be nice, it would probably cost me about $350 per year in fuel. But the Volt would cost me around $40.
If the car doesn't do 40 miles on a charge, then GM will not be able to justify the cost of the car. I hope it drops to within range of the Prius. If it does then GM will finally win one round against Toyota, something they haven't done in a while. If not, well, you keep up your pessimism, I hope it serves you well, while I will keep up my optimism. In a few years we'll see what happens. Today it is all just speculation.

obvoiusly if it's in the 40+ grand department it's not going to really be worht it. But if its under 40k, I'll be looking for a new car at that time, looking at between $30-$40k and at a GM vehicle. If it can get me to work and back and a few other stops (maybe 25-30 miles round trip) without gas, looks similar to the concept, and has the options I am looking for, I expect it to be in my driveway. If I'm going to buy a new car, and it fits into what I'm looking for, why shouldn't I buy it?

Ever thought how long it will take to recoup the money you've spent on the gimmick over a comparable/reliable fuel efficient car? Remember there will be $25K-30K premium over lets say Cobalt XFE.

Ah ok you're buying it because it would be because of looks and it's "in style" or it might have a high "gotta have it" factor, you're not nessesarly buying because of cost efficiency? Ok, got it.
$40K for a grocery getter, who would've thought?

Sounds like a play from the German's playbook. lol

Any idea where the Volt is going to be built? I'm guessing it won't be in the good 'ol USofA. I hate retarded comments like this.

Ding you're right.
And is that guy saying the people building Hondas in Tennesse and Ohio don't work hard? Or is he just an ignorant moron?

IMO I'd rather drive smartly engineered Honda before a drive an overrated Toyota.

So, what exactly makes Honda engineers smarter than Toyota engineers, out of curiosity?
I hate Toyota, but Ignorant comments like this make me sad to be human

Do you see a HUGE Honda truck on the road being released even tho they knew gas prices were sky high. BTW tell me one innovation Toyota has come up with, and no the Prius doesn't count.

Of course he's an ignorant moron. He still thinks all GM vehicles are made in the USA, and all Honda's are made in Japan. Complete idiot indeed.

Sounds like you guys are more upset with the big-wigs. Engineers design systems and components, your anger/frustration is misdirected.
I am willing to accept your upcoming apologies
*disclaimer: if anyone brings up that the big-wigs most likely have an engineering background, try to remember that Morton Thiokol's decision-makers did too. Once the business hat goes on, they DO become different people.

actually, I would be buying it because I like it. (weather instyle, or chick, it wouldn't matter to me) And if I'm looking in that price range, I would be stupid not to consider it because its going to save me thousands of dollars in gas. Is there a reason that I should not consider it with other cars in the 30-40k range? (and as I said if it's over $40k, It's likely not in my range, but it's not supposed to be over that) I'm not really sure you've read and comphrehended what is being said here, I think you just like to argue. If I only drive to work and the store, I could feasibly never put gas in it.....

nope no moron, just dont like honda's. rather by a domestic over import.
I bought a Cobalt (actually 2 of them) at the $25k price for the fully loaded one, so I very highly doubt that the Volt will be $50k+ to reach your $25-30K more then the cobalt I have. it may be more then the xfe, but If I'm in the market for a Volt, or most other people, I doubt they are in the the same market as the xfe people...I suppose there might be a couple people looking for the cheapest car with the best milage, but the rest of us have a price range to look in and this car will fit in much of the buying publics price range, and be a far better gas milage performer then most all the comparables.

Oh I grasp at what everybody is saying, you all would spend $35K-40K for a grocery getter. It is like the mentality of IPOD, there are better and lower cost MP3 players, but because of the novelty I must have IPOD.

Basic Cobalts can be had $10-12K newspaper advertised price, Volt's technology adds $25K-30K for basically the same class of car. Do the math. Your main purpose is save money on fuel correct? Yet the price premium you spend on the Volt, it will take minimum 10 years (15 years I think) to recover the premium price to a comparable commuter car. Do you plan to keep the Volt 10-15 years to see the money you saved on fuel over the price of a efficient cheap econobox? Now do YOU comprehend what I'm telling you? Hey it is your money, so discussing this, is like peeing in the wind.
All I know that I would not hire you as my accountant.

I like the one from the video, very nice.
The problem with the way your thinking about my choice is, I wouldn't buy the Base Cobalt at $10k, I'd buy one with more options. thus the difference in price won't be as much.
But even the problem there is, it's a 4 door midsize, not a 2door/4door compact car, and if I compare it to a malibu or camry, it will cost about the same, and will save me money on gas. Is that not true?
