I have been planning picking up a 05-08 mustang GT or possibly waiting out the 2010 mustang
I am embarassed to say, but this genisis coupe is making me think otherwise
I wouldn't be embarassed at all. Hyundai is popping out some GOOD cars. Also from what I've been seeing...the future for Hyundai is looking REALLY good.
I'm getting the Track 2.0T - I want the HIDs...hehe
Am I the only one that thinks it looks disgusting? It looked good during the Super Bowl commercial, but these base model pics are not impressing me.
Even the interior is pretty blah, and even compared to GM!.
I don't think the RWD, great price point, and decent power output make up for the lackluster appearance.

I think that some colors and angles make it look too long and it definitely needs a body kit to liven it up, but I'm a RWD purist and honestly couldn't imagine buying a new FWD "sports" car.
There's one thing to like about this car. It's basically made to cash in on Drifting since a FWD car can't do that and since I expect this to be quite popular maybe it'll make other manufacturers rethink affordable RWD cars.
Are ya listening Ford? GM? Chrysler? The bar has been raised. Put your cars on a diet, lower their prices by a few grand, offer packages aimed at people who actually buy fast cars, stop trying to make luxury cars with your ponycars, and encourage people to hot-rod your engines. Then maybe you'll see some real sales.
Most people don't buy a car because it can do gay exercises such as drifting.
What bar is raised? Another non fuel efficient, overweight underpowered car? People don't want RWD cars anymore unless its specifically for a muscle car and this barely competes, for the price its right in the area of the Camaro SS which has about 100hp more and offers a V8 with similar if not better fuel economy from a proven engine. Even the top model will get spanked by the Cobalt SS and outhandled. Not to mention the price is 7-8k lower. You can encourage all you want but when you build @!#$ty engines people arent going to bother with them. The current Tibby can't hold boost to save its life.
I cannot wait to start raping them weekly at the track.

Did I really just read that? I think the two brain cells you have left (the one who tells you not to forget to breathe and the other one who tells you not to @!#$ your pants) are fighting together. Or raping each other if you prefer this term.

The soliditity of the engine is a valid concern, but come on now. It's cheaper than a Cobalt SS, it's a bona-fide sports car as opposed to a compact car built up to spec; and RWD is just better to drive around fast. I don't care how much power there's in the car. FWD has always been a compromise. It gets better traction in snow and allows manufacturers to package the car more efficiently. Beyond that, it's not useful or fun. It's fragile, can't handle more than 300hp without massive torque steer and it just is... meh, to drive.
Now, don't think I'm trash talking the Cobalt SS. I like the car. It's a very very cool little package and it's wicked fast. But I'd rather have less power and RWD because you can toss the car around on the track and do all sorts of crazy stuff like the Scandanavian Flick. Can't do that with a FWD car.
Also, the Genesis has tons of features the Cobalt doesn't. Yeah, it's still a Hyundai, and I HATE HYUNDAI, but damnnnnnn.... flappy paddle gearbox, push button starter, standard everything, lim-slip diff, brembo brakes, leather interior, track packs, gobs of aftermarket support and it looks like a Ferrari that had sex with a Nissan Z/Infinity G.
I'd be willing to bet you're right about the quality of the parts, I've never trusted Hyundai, but that's why a car comes with a warranty don't it? If the thing lasts me 5-6 years under spirited driving without costing me a dime. It's done it's job. Plus when the engine goes I can toss an LSx under the hood. Try that with a Cobalt.

The Canadian Genesis coupe will be somewhat different than the US one. Not surprising since our Tiburon has a bunch of option packages that yours doesn't like the GTP version and a base version that comes without A/C. We don't seem to get an R version on our 2.0T and Grand Touring version on the 3.8. Also our Track Package is called the GT.
Anyway, for the Canucks on the board, here's the info:
Quote:
Pricing and Packaging
Genesis Coupe comes with available luxury and performance technologies
such as HID headlights, a proximity key with push button start, a Brembo(R)
brake package, Torsen(R)-type limited slip differential, 19-inch alloy wheels,
GT-calibrated suspension with front strut tower bar, and heated leather seats.
The 2010 Genesis Coupe will be offered in two distinct trim levels, the
2.0T and the 3.8.
2010 Genesis Coupe 2.0T
The Genesis Coupe 2.0T is powered by a 2.0-litre in-line four cylinder
Turbocharger with a front-mounted intercooler for increased engine efficiency
and power. A six-speed manual transmission is offered as standard equipment,
along with steering wheel-mounted Bluetooth, audio and cruise controls;
18-inch alloy wheels; six airbags; Electronic Stability Control (ESC); an
antilock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD);
fog lights; metal grain interior trim; USB and auxiliary audio outlets;
automatic light control; a trip computer; a leather-wrapped steering wheel and
gear shift knob; power and heated exterior mirrors; and an AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3
stereo system with six speakers.
The 2010 Genesis Coupe 2.0T can be equipped with an optional Premium
Package which includes such high-demand features as a power sunroof, heated
leather seats, and an Infinity AM/FM/XM six-disc CD changer and MP3 stereo
with 10 speakers.
The GT Package will impress the performance-oriented consumer. This trim
comes with a six-speed manual transmission and includes a Brembo braking
system, Torsen-type limited slip differential, unique black leather seats with
premium red cloth inserts, 19-inch alloy wheels and HID headlamps.
All of the 2.0T trims are available with an optional five-speed automatic
transmission with paddle shifters, with the exception of the GT.
2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8
The Genesis Coupe 3.8 features an advanced all-aluminum
naturally-aspirated V6 engine displacing an impressive 306 horsepower (regular
fuel), coupled with a six-speed manual transmission and a standard Torsen-type
limited slip rear differential. Features include all of the equipment provided
on the Genesis 2.0T Premium, plus mirror-mounted turn signals, chrome lower
fascia slats, HID headlights with autolevelling, a proximity key with push
button start, a power driver's seat, auto-dimming rear view mirror with
Homelink(TM) and a compass, and premium door scuff plates.
The 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 can also be equipped with an optional GT
Package. The 3.8 GT Package builds off the 3.8 base and offers the same
options as the 2.0T GT, however the seating is black leather rather than black
with red inserts.
All 3.8 models may be equipped with a ZF six-speed automatic transmission
with paddle-shifters.

I would like to add one thing:
I hate to go back on what I've previously said, but now that I've taken a good look at the prices in both Canadian and US dollars I'm not quite as enthusiastic about this car, I hadn't noticed how close to the V8 versions of the American ponycars the V6 was priced and I have to admit that the 3.8 isn't that competitive against the Challenger R/T, Mustang GT and Camaro SS that it'll be going up against. In fact, it's a bit outclassed. Even with the car's lighter weight, a 300hp V6 is just not enough against that monstrous Hemi or the 400+hp Camaro. Without even looking at times, I'm betting that the Camaro will destroy it on every front, that it'll beat the Challenger in the twists and get clobbered on the straight, and bitchslap the Mustang in everything; but that the Stang will technically feel faster because of the V8 sound and gobs of torque.
However, the base 2.0T (especially when taking into account the 84 month financing and modding potential) will definitely be a great alternative to the base Mustang and Challenger who are too heavy, clumsy and underpowered.
On the other hand, the base Camaro will clear the base Hyundai's clock. So you GM guys can rejoice. You got a winner... you bastards.
Still, any new 2+2 RWD coupe is a welcome addition to the new car market and the Genesis will definitely get a well deserved following because of it's 2.0T Track pack and R versions.
this car is meant to go head to head with the G37 coupe and nissan 350z. The 4 door genesis is meant to go up against the G37 4 door and entry levels BMWS, audis, and mercedes (whether it is successful or not time will tell)
Those of you comparing it to domestic muscle and fwd sport coupes are way way WAY off the mark here
i drive a hyundai azera almost everyday at work. has the 3.8 in it. i must say... im freaking dumbfounded at how fast and torquey it is. and its a freaking fullsize fwd fully loaded car. the v6 sonatas are nothing to shake a stick at either.
the genesis definitely looks like something id like to drive. maybe even own.
it won't be when you find out the source of the 2 engines ... the 4 cyl is a de-tuned version of the EVO X engine and the V6 is the same 3.8 that mitsu puts in everything ... I think Hyundai has built a winner .... or a game changer at least
ok well you dont have to compare it to a cobalt ss im just pointing out that its far cheaper and delivers more performance, compare it to a gm rwd car, the sky redline or soltice gxp, sky is cheaper, has more power and we all should know what you can do with a LNF engine, I dont see hynpiss competing with that in any way, you can offer every "track pack" you want it doesnt stack up to the cars its supposed to beat at the price
A 310 "CRANK HORSEPOWER" rwd hyundai is no match for any fwd car under 3000lbs with 300+ "WHEEL HORSEPOWER". People seem to have no concept of power to weight ratio.

Do not want. Hyundai has never built a rear wheel drive car before, so I'm guessing that they are terrible at it.
They've been building engines for a while, and they're still terrible at that, too. Electronics in Hyundais are a bust, too. Sure, you can get more features for less, but at what price? A friend has a Hyundai Santa Fe. It has heated seats. They only have one setting: burn your ass hair. It has a premium interior package. Made of what seems to be recycled coke bottles given a harsh grain to them. Premium stereo? It was from the base Accent. The engine has no torque and the automatic transmission feels like someone learning to drive stick on a school bus. The little unlock your doors key fob even has issues. The buttons don't work half the time, even at point blank.
tl;dr - Hyundai's are $#!%, and if you think this one will be any different, you're wrong.
