2013 Cadillac ATS
Thursday, August 04, 2011 8:07 AM
This will be Cadillac's answer to the A4, IS, 3-series, C-Class.

From GM...

-$117 million investment in Oshawa, Ont., plant to launch Cadillac XTS in 2012
-Cadillac compact luxury sports sedan codenamed ATS launching in summer 2012
-Buick Regal eAssist ‘light electrification’ option priced at $2,000

General Motors North America President Mark Reuss announced today the launch of two new luxury cars for Cadillac in 2012 and the pricing for a fuel-saving feature on the Buick Regal as he outlined parts of a plan to help GM attract more customers.

Cadillac next year will launch the XTS large luxury sedan and a compact luxury sports sedan codenamed ATS, models that will bracket the CTS Sedan, Coupe and Wagon family, Reuss said at the Center for Automotive Research’s Management Briefing Seminars.

GM is investing $117 million to make the XTS at its Oshawa Assembly Plant in Ontario where 400 jobs will be created or retained.

In addition to the two new Cadillacs, Reuss said the eAssist feature on the 2012 Buick Regal will be a $2,000 option. The light electrification technology delivers an estimated 25-percent improvement in fuel economy, giving Regal eAssist an EPA fuel economy rating of 36 mpg highway/25 mpg city.

“GM has moved beyond a stage of simply surviving and is now clearly focused on thriving with a line-up that’s stronger in more segments than it has ever been,” Reuss said. “Whether it’s the new fuel-efficient Buick eAssist system or Cadillac’s entry-level luxury car, we’re giving customers compelling new options for their next automobile.”

Some of those potential customers are “millennials,” a target of Chevrolet to reach the next generation of buyers though a partnership with MTV.

Regal eAssist, which goes on sale this fall, captures energy created during braking to charge a 115V lithium-ion battery that powers a 11-kW (15 horsepower) motor-generator, augmenting a 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine.

The eAssist system also allows the engine to shut down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions, saving additional fuel. It has underbody aerodynamics and special tires to further improve fuel economy. Based on $4-per-gallon gasoline, the eAssist option on the Regal should pay for itself in about 3½ years.

The Cadillac XTS, which will be launched in spring of 2012, is based on the XTS Platinum Concept unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will offer an advanced front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive system.

The Cadillac codenamed ATS, which will be launched in the summer of 2012, will give the brand a rear-wheel drive luxury sports car to compete head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 in the luxury market’s largest segment. GM today released its first sketch of the car.

GM previously announced a $190 million investment to build the compact luxury sports sedan at its Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan that will result in 600 new or retained jobs. Lansing Grand River already makes the mid-size CTS family of cars honored by Car and Driver, AUTOMOBILE Magazine, Motor Authority, Edmunds Inside Line and Popular Mechanics.

“The Cadillac Renaissance that started with the CTS is still going strong,” Reuss said. “The XTS continues Cadillac’s heritage as the leader in large luxury cars while the car we’ve codenamed ATS starts a new chapter for Cadillac in the luxury market’s C-segment. We’re confident it will attract luxury car buyers who previously would not have considered Cadillac.”

From what you can see it looks great!

Is this off a new platform? Or is it shared with something else?

From the profile it looks (stylistically) exactly like the CTS. Nothing original there. I want to see the head lights and rear and the details that make it recognizable as the ATS. This picture may as well have been a darkened picture of a CTS.

Dammit, wrong car. That was supposed to be a picture of a Regal, not a Verano.

Yes, it is a all-new platform named "Alpha." This new platform will also underpin the next Camaro in 2015/16 model year. The platform as of now is a shorten/modern version of the Sigma. GM is tight lipped on what this platform's parts consist of, but it will be RWD for sure.

Like the IDEA of this car, as long as they incorporate a strong non-hybrid power plant and manual transmission. Unfortunately MSRP will probably be >35k, if the regal is any indication...

This might be a spy shot of an updated look of the CTS, but it's NOT the ATS. The fender vent tips you off to that.

Update from GM...

Cadillac Offers Glimpse of New Luxury Compact

Cadillac is showing a behind-the-scenes video of the development of its new compact luxury car, codenamed ATS.

The two-minute video features interviews with GM North America President Mark Reuss, who is test-driving a pre-production development version of the car, along with global Vehicle Line Executive David Leone, lead development engineer Chris Berube, and performance engineer Kevin Zelenka.

“How do you put a metric on what the soul of the car is? And I think that’s what we’re creating that’s very unique here is a soul for Cadillac in this segment that we haven’t had before,” Reuss says in the video.

The small Cadillac will begin production next summer at the Lansing Grand River plant, the same Michigan assembly plant that builds the award-winning midsize Cadillac CTS sedan, coupe and wagon. The plant received a $190 million investment and 600 jobs for the new model.

Update from GM...

New 2.0L Turbo Engine Boosts the Cadillac ATS
2011-12-14

-135 horsepower per liter among top-performing engines in the world
-Compact ATS debuts at North American International Auto Show in Detroit

DETROIT A new high-performance 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine will debut in the all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS compact luxury sedan, which will be revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in January.

The Cadillac-tuned, direct-injected engine will produce an estimated 270 horsepower (201 kW). At 135 horsepower per liter, it will be one of the most power-dense automotive engines, besting the highest-performing engines from luxury competitors such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan,¡± said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing. The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive.

The new 2.0T highlights a broad engine lineup that will power the ATS which is slated to begin production next summer. Cadillac will also offer a normally aspirated 2.5L four cylinder engine and a 3.6L V-6 engine in the ATS.

The 2.0T builds on the advanced-technology heritage of previous GM turbo engines with features that enhance efficiency, durability and refinement.

Among the 2.0T engine's highlights: a direct-injection twin-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing; twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler; forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system; and a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling.

Overall engine friction is reduced by up to 16 percent. The low-friction design means engine power is delivered more efficiently.

Proprietary computational fluid dynamics analysis techniques were used to develop an all-new combustion system with a higher compression ratio, which also helped boost efficiency.

The 2.0T is one of the most advanced and efficient engines of its kind, and contributes to the ATS's exceptional balance of performance and great fuel efficiency, said Mike Anderson, chief engineer for the 2.0T engine.

The 2.0T has a wide torque curve, delivering 90 percent of its peak 260 lb-ft. of torque (353 Nm) from 1,500 rpm to 5,800 rpm giving the ATS the feeling of immediate power, whether from launch at a stop light or during higher-speed maneuvers, such as passing.

The turbocharger generates up to 20 pounds of boost and its twin-scroll design helps optimize power availability, virtually eliminating turbo lag and helping deliver a broad power band.

It has the exhilarating, responsive power available when you want it, yet can provide the fuel efficiency that will make the ATS a fully competitive vehicle in global markets, Anderson said.

At 135 hp/L, the ATS 2.0T four-cylinder turbo engine has the highest power density among key competitors, including:
-Audi A4's 2.0L turbo (105.5 hp/L)
-BMW M3's V-8 (103.5 hp/L)
-Lexus IS F's V-8 (83.2 hp/L)
-Mercedes-Benz C250's 1.8L turbo (111.6 hp/L)

Additional details on the ATS will be announced at the 2012 NAIAS. The ATS will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant alongside the Cadillac CTS Sedan, Coupe and Sport Wagon and V-Series performance cars.
