Finally Gettin My Stereo In My GAGT
Thursday, February 17, 2005 8:08 PM
Well after totalling the ol' sunfire, i havent gotten around to gettin my stereo installed into the Grand Am (now yes i could do it myself, yes it would cost less, but quite frankly i'm too damn busy to do it myself) i do know how to install it as i installed in into the sunfire, but i just dont wan to be bothered, i'd rather be able to just drop it off in the morning, pick it up later on that night, and have a perfectly installed system.

anyways heres wut i got:

Alpine CDA-7893
Alpine Type R 6 1/2" components
Alpine Type R 6x9's
2 Alpine Type R DVC 12" subs
MRV-F340 & MRD-M300 amps
Digital Rockford Cap

OKay...

Winston, what year is the car? If you go someplace that tells you you need the cable to hook up the stereo elsewhere, walk out. The Cable is about $60 and all you get to keep is your warning chimes.

Otherwise, sounds like a decent setup, but knowing the N-body it's going to be more than a day to get the stereo installed.

you wont need it. they can just route new speaker wire to the speakers. it will sound better that way anyway.

Peace Out!!!

from wut i'm told is it has to do with the fact that the monsoon is run through the ECM or sumthin so I have to get it

my 01 Z24 had the same Monsoon system. i have every audio component changed to aftermarket and i ran my own wires to the new speakers. i have had no problems. they are just feeding you that ECU crap to sell you a $200 part. somebody else correct me if im wrong, but you dont need that cable even if you have a Monsoon system.

Peace Out!!!

the mrdm 300 is not enough power for those subs, plus you would be running too low of an ohm load i think?

women are like cars you have to test drive the new one before you trade in the old one

i have had it running those subs for 3 years now and havent had a problem, and they pound more than enough for me.

as far as the module for the monsoon goes i'm gonna have to look in to that. can anyone explain what the module is supposed to do and why just running new wires will cancel it.

its just an amplifier for the rear speakers, thats all. the fronts should be powered by the stock head unit. what i did was use a wiring harnes so i could used the stock wiring to the front speakers so i wouldnt have to run new wire through the dash and through the rubber covering the wiring on the door. since the fronts are not amp powered, this was no problem. thats the ONLY reason i have a harness. HU is connected straight to the battery, its grounded to some bare metal under the center console, and i tapped into the windshield wiper fuse for the turn on wire.

Peace Out!!!

Well after a little talking with my buddy at the install shop, he explained to me the purpose of the module. The BCM(body control module) is looped through the factory headunit, so when you operate without the stock HU it will notice that and store a fault code in the BCM. Now everything will operate properly for a certain amount of time then once the BCM gets full of these fault codes, it will trigger ur service light. Also weird things such as unexpected airbag deployment has occured.

*sigh* totally untrue. the air bags have their own module. it is under the passenger seat, under the carpet on cavaliers/sunfires. it may be in the same spot on your car. you will NOT get a check engine or service light because your HU is not plugged in.

http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=4&i=51826&t=51826

this sticky explains the whole deal regarding the 2000+ GM head units.

the BCM 'gets full' of these codes? it doesnt just store them and one day just pop and say 'error, error'. please understand that you WILL be fine without your stock head unit, and without that $200 bs harness.

Peace Out!!!
