Muscle Car gurus Help
Wednesday, February 23, 2005 4:46 PM
Ok a long time ago I remember seeing a muscle car (Camaro I believe) that in its cowl panel (peice in between the hood and the winshield) when they gave it the throttle the vents opened. I was wondering if that came stock on any particular muscle car models and if not if anyone could point me in the direction of where I could find out more info on this. I would really like to see some pictures of them on the cars as well as how they actually worked.
If I don't reply to this that means I am out of posts for the month. Thanks ahead of time guys.

yes it came stock, when there was no manifold vacuum it trigered a solinoid which made the part your talking about pop up, My buddy had it on his camaro, I want to say it was maybe late 70's but I believe early 80's (before the irco body style of camaro)

70's Trans Ams with a shaker hood had a flap that open in reverse induction... it opened with the throttle, but IIRC it was solenoid driven, but it had an armature.

Anyhow.. They were mostly on the Superduty 455's...

Dodge and Plymouth used to have an option called "Air Grabber". Not 100% sure of the correct name, or the cars it came on. I know some late 60's to early 70's had them. My friend has one on his 1971 Plymouth Road Runner.

On some of the 69 z28s cowl induction was an option.A rare one my friends 69 z28 has one. Those 302s they came with were pretty cool engines. There is even a 69 z28 in town with the cross ram induction imagine that two 4 barrels on a 302.The cross ram induction was a super rare option

The cowl that I was talking was like the one in the picture of that Chevelle that Tribal S posted. I think it was seperated into one center peice or two seperate peices. Is there anywhere I could find some closer up pictures of that? Also on the rare z-28's were they just one piece as well or two? This is my last post for the month since I am out of post. Thanks again ahead of time guys.

The z28 cowl was different than the chevelle that tribals was showing. The induction that he was showing was from the 450hp ls6 chevelle. On the 69 z28 the opening was at the rear of the cowl not on the cowl itself as in the ls6 chevelle.

i never understood how a cowl induction like that could do anything. i mean, it's facing backwards

i believe the mopar air grabbers are activated by a switch on the dashboard. i'm pretty sure that's what i read in one of my car books, but i'm too lazy to check it out right now

Your wind sheld is the highest pressuse spot on your car. so all the pressure was used and pushed down in to the cowl. Trust me one this one. Try to find some old air flow charts of the car, I have seen them around somewhere on the net.
