Hunt is over (new car)
Sunday, February 27, 2005 1:11 AM
Well, the hunt for my project car is finally over. I picked her up tonight.

I found a 1991 Eagle Talon in Texas (I live in Louisiana its about 3.5 hours to the car) so I said screw it. Me and my buddy hopped into my car and drove to Texas. We got to the guys house at about 10:00pm. It was well light so I could see the car well. The outside was in great shape. No oxidation very few dings. It was white with a black top and spoiler. How its popular to do the top half one color and the bottom another color. It looked good too. Had a 2.25" custom exhaust with a high flow cat and a muffler.

So the ultimate taste came up. I popped the hood and I was stunned. I would have put my sandwhich down on that valve cover and never thought twice about picking it up and eating it. Gorgeous. I checked the oil. Almost perfect just a hair under which is good. Nice and clean. I would not be suprised it if only had 100 miles or less on the oil change. No leaks that I could find. So I started it up and the exhaust had a really good tuned note to it. The interior was grey and in excellent shape. No pwr options but ehh who cares. I could hear the AC compressor kick on and the guy assured me it blew really cold air (cant tell because its cold outside its gonna blow cold air now no matter what.) The guy wanted 1600. I took it for a drive and it grined a little in 2nd and 3rd. ALmost like the clutch was going out. I came back and told the guy. He said he had the same problem when he first got the car. The clutch is very picky. So he took me for a drive and it didn't grind. He said he had it checked out by a mechanic and the mech. said it was fine. So I told the guy I would give him 1,400 for it. He agreed and it was settled.

So the outcome... an extremly clean 1991 Eagle Talon Non-Turbo 5-speed. 16" alloy stock wheels and stock 4-wheel disk brakes =P

Sorry for the long post. Pics will be up tomorrow. I'm tired its very late...or early one of them.

Nice find. Very nice find. If I'd had $1400 to spare I'd have jumped on it too. What are your plans for it?

i would of talked him down more. I paid 800bucks for a 91 talon non turbo years ago. roughly the sam condin. The car will be a huge money pit.

Well just basic bolt ons at first. I'm going to race it Auto X so I dont want to modify it too much or it will put me in a different class. I wanna get the hang of it first. 1800 was actually my budget. So i'm going to be ordering an Intake and header.

After that slotted and cross drilled rotors for the front and rear. Struts, and springs. Stage II Clutch and then I haven't decided what road to take for more HP after that. I'm not looking for a complete horsepower monster or else I wouldn't have bought a non-turbo. I may just build a junk yard turbo and run a small amount of boost. Or a 55shot of Zex.

As far as exterrior....oh I know exactly whats going on. Since the top of the car is black like I described. I want to do a Carbon fiber OEM hood. 16" black wheels with a polished lip. I want a small drop, like an Eibach 1.4" drop.

I have looked at them around here. If you think you could have gotten it cheaper oh well. My money not yours I dont see why you're worried about it. Unless you would just like to make yourself look better or something. "I would have talked him down more" ok... considering I paid 500 under blue book and less then 3 others half as nice I guess I got ripped.

Nice Purchase Red Assassin. Sounds like the car is in great shape, which is rare for a 14 year old car

WTF are you talking about? He got a good deal, giving the guy $800 would have been robbery. The Kelly Blue Book on that car is $2,325-$3,800 depending on miles and condition - so what he payed was more than fair. Maybe you should actually have some idea what your talking about before you go and start posting bullsh!t.

And as for reliability problems - the biggest issue with those cars is the 4-speed autos - which he doesn't even have!! The other issues are the PCM failing (which is unlikely if it hasn't already failed), the Idle Speed Control Motor, and the Timing Belt, which should be changed regularly anyway. Nothing too serious at all, as long as its been well maintained (which it has).

Just because one person (MikeGT) had a bad experience with an $800 beater doesn't mean that the cars are "money pits" or that he "payed too much", if you don't know what you are talking about don't say anything at all.

Good luck with the car Red Assassin, I'm sure it will be a fun vehicle

Thanks wes, yea I know I probably will run into a few problems. Its a 91 with 130k on it. I knew that when I bought it though. I was really impressed with the guy selling it. He was...ehh I wanna say Arabian or something. Looked like Apu (you know the quickie mart owner on simpsons) he told me all the good stuff like everyone always does, but he pointed out every small detail that was wrong before I found it. Which wasn't many. The guy owned it for 2 years and was selling it because he was moving to florida and it was kinda his toy. He owned 2 other vehicles and didn't wanna have to pull it or something all the way to Florida. He told me it was quick, he had it up to 90 on a road of dead highway once. I had to keep from laughing. Like 90 was a real big deal, lol. Its good to know he babied it though. You can certainly tell. I'm happy with it. A few small things that bothered me though. 1. was the windshield whipers were white! Ack they were huge plastic hideous white whipers. They sucked anyways so I just replaced them today with some stock black ones. I'm getting ready to go pick up a dispopal camera at wal-mart and take some pictures (wife still has my digital camera =/ )

The link to the AutoTrader is HERE

If it says it has been moved, just click on it again and it'll work. Might have to click it 2 or 3 times. I'll try and get pictures of everything tomorrow. I know the mirror is blue, I have black paint and sandpaper to fix it, lol

Good buy, it should serve you well in auto-x. The only thing I would say would be to change the timing belt. They are known to go and once they do your looking at a very expensive repair bill. Other than that have fun with it, and post up some pics.

The belt its self is expensive or to have it replaced is expensive? Cause I'll be doing all the labor on this car myself with the help of a friend.

^^^neither...if the belt snaps or even jumps a few teeth you will bend valves for sure and then it becomes expensive. Just get a new belt on there before you run into that problem.

I know that's important on the T 4G63, but is it still a "must do" on the NA motor?
