1989 RX7

Hey, I'm looking at buying this rx7. actually, i'm probably going to win it. i just wanted to know what you all thought of it before i am actually stuck buying it. does the price seem right, etc? i know it says there's a lot of body work that needs done, but that doesn't bother me since my friend is a good body man (and interior guy). the mileage also doesn't bother me too much, because the engine/tranny/suspension is getting replaced soon enough and i looked at a few of his other sales, and they all seem to be pretty accurate descriptions of the cars.

i was looking at spending $750 on one almost exactly the same, except the motor didn't run and the paint was really bad (oxidized), so i don't think this one's such a bad deal, considering i could drive it home.

the only thing that kinda bothers me is this email i sent him, and the response:

"Hi, I am very interested in the RX7 that you are selling. I just have a few questions about it: There's one picture that shows a piece of the body cracked. Is that the rear spoiler? What exactly is wrong with it? The car is a manual transmission, correct? Is there anything else about the car that I should know about before I click the Buy it now? Thanks for any information, Ian"

Ian, Its a good buy !!!! Thanks, John Glessner usedcarsrus

??? what is that? oh well, i'll wing it

well, i just sent him this:

Is there a phone number I could call to get in contact with you? I would really like to know more about the car if I'm spending $2000 on it. If all you're going to give me is "Ian, Its a good buy !!!! Thanks, John Glessner usedcarsrus," then please cancel my bid.

Thanks again

so we'll see what happens

i'd steer clear...hit up www.rx7club.com if you really want to find a car that's been cared for by an enthusiast near you. there are a TON of RX7s for sale on there.

try nopistons.com too.

Thats a nice car, FCs' are great autoXers, quick, light and agile. I'd hold out for a Turbo II but thats just me,

First thing you do is make sure it is running and the cooling system in in top condition, keep her well oiled up. after that I'd try and get some new apex seals cryo frozen. I heard many good things from doing that.

165k is pretty high mileage for a rotary engine isnt it?

this car will be getting worked over pretty thoroughly, so most of the stuff that would usually bother me (like dings, mileage, etc) doesn't really matter. i just want a nice starting point, and i think this is

eh.

not for that price

seriously, look on rx7club. you can find much nicer for cheaper. you know my FB cost me $200 running? she only needed body work before someone flooded the motor...there are steals like that all over those forums...and you can get a better idea of the car's condition, since it's NOT an auction.

i'd avoid the ebay purchase if i were you.

bah id put something more compact in there, like a cobra motor

plus it seems more fitting as mazda is part-owned by ford lol

eh...but a 350 fits so nicely in a second gen...

i'd still prefer my first gen with a 3.8L turbo V6

well, i called for insurance, and my insurance company is jacking me around. they want to charge me $1200/year for liability! i only pay $1700/year for full coverage on my newer, lower-mileage cavalier. so, i emailed and asked to retract the bid. hopefully he comes through, and if not i don't know what's gonna happen

Re: 1989 RX7

well...here's a suggestion. wait a bit on it, at least until after you have reduced insurance rates...save up money, and spend it when you know you can afford the vehicle, the insurance, the maintenance, and a second vehicle if you keep the Wankel... trust me on that last one most of all

no wankel for me, i'm going with an LS1. plus, i'm keeping my cav for daily driving (at least until i finish off the rex). my insurance should go down soon, because i'll be turning 19 in 2 weeks, and by next january my accident will be gone.

so, i guess i'm going to wait it out... well, at least i sold everything off of my car that made it fun to drive (sarcasm)!!!

well u said you were going to mod it, and tear it apart, while your doing that you dont need insurance!!!!!!!!!!!! so in that time being hopefully the insurance will go down!

yea, but i want to drive it while saving up money for modifications

ah @!#$, i dunno

Re: 1989 RX7

insurance drops when you're 21, not 19.

if you intend to drive it, then get something that's MECHANICALLY sound, and something close by that you can drive. AVOID EBAY if this is your choice...cars there are likely to be overpriced and overhyped, or they have underlying problems.

if you do an LS1 swap, it won't fit in an FC...they fit in FDs much better. you can get a 350 swap that makes it fast enough without getting an ellis...trust me. there's a guy in Baltimore who has an FC350, and she's mighty quick. on top of that...do you intend to make this a race car? it's hardly streetable with the 350 in it...unless you really dump some money into it.

save your money for now...don't do what i did, and jump on getting the car first without being able to afford to do what you want to do with it. there will ALWAYS be FCs for sale, and there's always going to be a good deal on one...be patient, not impulsive.

it won't let me retract the bid, and the seller "doesn't know how to"

so i'm not gonna be paying for it, i guess

This guy is jerking you around.

"doesnt know how to". ebay has a help section, tell him to find it because you're not gonna pay.

Re: 1989 RX7

sounds like the seller is really an idiot, or he's a jerk, and wants to get your money one way or another.
