2003 Ford Focus ZX2

This is a technical question which really belongs to a Ford Focus forum, but I was looking for some quick input on this matter:

My friend drives a 2003 5-speed Ford Focus ZX2. Today she noticed that her car shakes violently once she hits 60+ MPH on the highway. Needless to say, she's a little freaked out because her warranty has just expired.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

1st of all i don't think they made a ZX2 in '03, so it is either a '02 zx2 or an '03 zx3 (hatchback).

as for the problem: sounds like her tires need to be rotated or the alignment or balaning is off. She needs a tune up, then if the problem is still there it may be something slightly more serious like shocks/springs/struts, maybe even ball joints (which i can't see on a 3yr old car, but then again i've seen worse.)

most likely the tires need to be balanced and rotated

your first problem is your friend has a car that doesnt exist
zx2 was an escort, zx3 or zx5 are focuses (or foci or whatever)

but as mentioned, check tires and alignment. i can almost guarantee thats the problem

Acutally there was a 2003 Ford ZX2, Click here. It was slightly redesigned from 2002 because Ford was trying to keep the ZX2 with the Focus lineup...but due to low sales, and cost, it was offically scrapped in 2004...but yea, tire rotation i think is probably the problem.

Hahaha, I expected more Ford jokes actually. Anyways...

You're right! it's not a ZX2, it's a ZTS (I always get them mixed up for some reason). My apologies for the confusion.

My thanks for your responses as well.

well, when i first got my 1996Z24 way back when, i got an 02 ls sport now. well, when i first got it. around 70 or so the car would shake like crazy. before or after that it was fine. took it back like a week later to get that looked at and something else. ended up finding out i was driving the car on 2 cylinders. spark plugs had gone out in the other 2. they replaced them, oh and replaced my front struts, they were blown. then had no engine issues at all. have the spark plugs checked and/or replaced. it may fix the issue. good luck.

Is it winter where she lives? I had the same thing yesterday.. Really bad vibration around 60mph.. I took it to a garage, they told me that snow and ice was caked up inside the rim.. They hosed it off really good, and the vibration went away..

Tell her to go to a tire shop and get the wheels balanced and rotated. If there are any problems with the tire or wheel itself they should be able to pick up on that when they balance it. Be sure to tell them what the problem is.
