Seen a factory turbo TA...help?
Wednesday, March 02, 2005 9:47 PM
Was badged like a GTA...but the GTA logos said turbo instead....what's up with that? Looked like a 90 or so, not sure about the generations, but it was in that year range, give or take a few years. I know the 3rd gen has a more recent phase to it...but I didn't catch the front to see what phase it was, I think it was the 2nd.

in 1989 Pontiac released the 20th anniversary Trans Am, it had the Buick Grand National's turbo v-6 in it. and was...at the time, the fastest production TA ever produced.

more on it here.

1989 20th turbo T/A site

they are very rare, and wayyyy cool. i'd take one in a heartbeat

For Paul, was this GTA electric blue by any chance?
All the REAL ones were white pace care editions to my knowledge, but there is, or at least was one in the Cleveland area I came across with a paint job, or swap.
I could hear the turbo whining as he flew away.

@!#$ @!#$ MOTHER @!#$ WHY COULDNT I FIND THIS @!#$ POST EARLIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anywho.......... this is off the top of my head.

1989 Turbo Trans Ams ALL came with autos and the LC2 buick turbo charged v-6 with a displacement of 3.8 (321 ci) 8.0:1 compression ratio with sequential fire injection with 3.27 posi rear end and a 200r4 with white exterior and tan interior. rated at 250 hp and 340 ft lbs. but rumored to have somewhere close to 280 hp.

little more indepth one (copy paste)

The Trans Am is selected to pace the Indianapolis 500. Pontiac markets another pace car replica. This special 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am (TTA) based on the GTA is only available in white with tan interior and comes equipped with a Buick 3.8L V6 with a turbocharger developed from the Grand National. These replicas are as close to the actual pace car as any replica offered up to this time. The only changes made to the cars that actually were on the track during the race were the additions of strobe lights and safety equipment. 1,555 were produced, 5 being test cars. Out of 1,550 cars produced by PAS, the actual pace cars were randomly selected and sent to Indy for testing and modification. When they were released to the public they were underrated in power. Not all came with T-Tops or came with leather either, there were hardtops and cloth cars. Every car has an an automatic transmission, the 200R4. The five test TTA's, because they were for pre-production use, were pulled off of the assembly line without regard to color and they were not white. At least two of these test cars were sold to private individuals. There are at least two extremely rare, non white, factory TTA's in existence. Its known that one is red. GM did not offer a factory convertible TTA. However, one was created by ASC.

Specs:

1,324 T-Top & Leather Interior
187 T-Top & Cloth Interior
24 Hardtop & Leather Interior
15 Hardtop & Cloth Interior (Base)

4 Test Cars with T-Top & Cloth Interior
1 Test Car with Hardtop & Leather Interior

my post is still the best, so eat me!

did you mean 231ci? 321ci would be somewhere around the high end of 5.2 or the low end of 5.3 liters (if my memory of hte formula serves correct)

yeah but borsty you forgot one GM prototype was developed with a 5-speed manual.

so there, your post was uncomplete.....nanny-nanny boo-boo. also i guess in the TTA's case it's actually a GOOD thing to not have T-tops and leather, those models are the rarest and pull the best $$$.

they were as quick as the GN in th e1/4 and faster top end , due to the T/A better aero shape

there is a couple that pop up around here from time to time

i doubt that one. they wouldnt make a v-6 faster cause they would never sell the v-8s (if your talking about bases engines in the 2nd gens.)
