Pontiac Grand-Am & Chevy Classic says good bye
Thursday, March 03, 2005 6:55 PM
General Motors said it is discontinuing production at a Lansing, Michigan plant which produced the Pontiac Grand Am and the Chevrolet Classic, the fleet version of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu, the Dow Jones Newswires reported.
Both models are being discontinued, so production at the plant is ending, and GM will lay off nearly 3,000 hourly workers at the plant later this spring, the story said. But many of the 2,950 hourly employees are expected to fill positions at GM's new Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant, which is under construction but expected to start production in 2006.
The replacement for the Grand Am, the Pontiac G6, is made at GM's assembly plant in Lake Orion.

Ahh guys, they get 95% of their pay during the whole laid off time.

It really hurts the local business here that catered to the workers and the smaller parts suppliers who will get laid off with no pay. Not the workers.

^^^True and we got to thank the unions for that.
But the suppliers that were contracted is being hurt, unless that they resigned them.

You may as well just delete your post. Have you ever been to the plant? Most the workers are 35-45+ years of age and make great pay and benefits. The workforce is pretty locked in and you can't get a job there as they have people knocking down the doors. GM only hired a couple hundred workers total among ALL of its US plants in a year. Its not some welfare mom place with high turnover, these guys DON'T leave there job. One plant closing is not making the whole state of michigan's unemployment jump up by 3%, we have 9-10 million people in the state. Come on now, use some common sense.

^^^dude ... the ex-con and welfare mom was a joke and a quote from 8 mile. Do you really think i was serious about the 10% unemployment? Come on!!!

I totally got the 8 mile reference joke.
LOL
but alot of the guys at the Orion plant ARE Alcoholics and drug addicts...not all but MOST, and that...is a fact. i worked for the parts warehouse for that plant and knew quite a few of them...ohhh, the stories i could tell. it's enough that i'd NEVER buy a Bonneville, Aurora, or even the new G6 knowing they come from that crack house.
