differance between vtec and ecotec?
Monday, March 07, 2005 9:30 PM
someone asked me the other day, and i have no clue! i dont even know what the ecotec stands for or if its another badge that doesnt mean anything? is it variable valve or cam timing? what exactly is it? i searched on the internet and all i found was a buncha reviews about the engine, but nothing explaining how it worked. if anyone has time and can answer my stupid noob question, i would be honored. i have had this car a month and dont even know how the ecotec works.

ecotec is just a marketing name

vtec is short for VVTT or variable vavle timing technology letting the use of changing the vavletrain to allow a longer powerband, higher rev, and a quicker rev.

not, close tho,
variable valve timing and electronic lift control

reving higher has nothing to do with it either, any car with stiffer valve springs can rev higher, but none will make power by doing so. it will allow you to make power in higher rpm by having 2 cam profiles. doesnt really do anything to the speed of your revs either

ahhhh....so in my case, should i even look at switching heads when the new engine comes out in 06, or should i just spend thne money on other mods for the non variable ecotec?
