Save the GM EV1!!!
Friday, March 11, 2005 11:55 AM
Some celebrities and civilians are trying to keep the last of General Motors EV1 electric cars from going to the crusher, according to a story in the Washington Post.

These cars are rarities, the story said, "...the last surviving batch of rechargeable electric coupes built by General Motors in the late 1990s." And GM wants to get rid of them.

When GM first offered the EV1s, some 800 drivers leased them, mostly in California. But after the last lease ran out in August, GM reclaimed all the cars. A few were donated to universities and car museums, but the rest are slated for destruction, the story said.

But diehards such as former "Baywatch" actress Alexandra Paul and "a band of homemakers, people with desk jobs, engineers, Hollywood activists and car enthusiasts," are maintaining a an around-the-clock vigil at a GM facility in California where they discovered about 77 surviving EV1s behind a company training center in Burbank.

Mobilized through Internet sites and word of mouth, nearly 100 people pledged $24,000 each for a chance to buy the cars from GM and have set up a "homely street-side outpost of folding chairs" to keep the cars from being trucked to a disposal site in Arizona, the story said.

But GM refuses to budge, saying it can't sell the cars because it would have a legal obligation to service them, something it can't do because many suppliers quit making the 2,000 unique parts that went into the design, the Post noted.

I would have bought one, remove the electric engine and put in either a W41 Quad-4 or the 2.3L Ecopower Turbo or the 2.0L Eco S/C. If you know something on this car, that the body is perfect for a gas engine, extreamly light and aerodynamic, not to mention, but plastic body panels too.
Damn GM!!

That's really too bad. Did you know GM spent about $1M per car, counting development costs?

If you don't think that we need to look for renewable resources to use in the transportation industry (and many others) you are a fool. I do not agree that global warming is as big a problem as it is sometimes made out to be, however smog and environmental pollutants are real. The industrialized world cannot continue to consume resources and pollute at its current rate.

I don't perticulary like extreme activists, but they do put pressure on companies and he Gov to create legislation.

Heres the way i see it, ill be dead, and all those that i love will be dead before something major happens to this @!#$hole planet. I will never drive one of those pieces of crap, even if my life depended on it. Call me an @!#$ and tell me im cruel, i dont care. I'm not the only one out there that wants to keep the internal combustion engine around for as long as they live. Cars just arent cars if they run on a plastic electric engine.

Now did we say anything about not trying to find renewable resources? No. Meckster and I just don't like these slow wanna be looking like buck rogers piece of crap cars. I would not be against any electric car if they didn't look so stupid and so get up an go.. Plus the cost for these thing are insane for what you are getting. Come one your driving a huge power wheel.

I still have years worth of promotional materials on those cars from like 1993 to present. Very cool idea, but I'll keep my polluting internal combustion motors.

It'd be great to see the looks on their faces if you'd drop a new LS7, 454 or 8.1L V8 in there. LOL

The body on this car is the most sophisticated GM has ever done. It is extreamly lightweight (with out the batteries and engine) and the most aerodynamic around (0.18 cd).
Now you get that body, slap on a powerful 4cyl work on the suspension components and you can have a Lotus Elise fighter.

I have to for look for the specs on this when I get home.
