1997 Civic EX power question?
Monday, March 14, 2005 4:02 AM
My friend has a 97 Civic EX with an intake and full Ebay exhaust with a test pipe that put his CEL on. Now I have a 2.2 (until tomorrow ) and I figure I have ~125 hp at the crank with intake and exhaust. Now when we line up, I BLOW him away off the line. First, he dumps the clutch from like 6 grand and spins and spins, and I dont even chirp with my 2500 rpm with brake torque. And on the highway, we are dead even until I top out. His car is lighter than mine, and he is boasting that he has around 150hp at the crank. I just roll my eyes at this. Cuz I feel that he has around 115-120 since he can't pull on me on the highway. I just want someone who knows about civics to give me some numbers on his engine's power output, because I know that I don't know, and I laugh at my bud when he tells me how much power he thinks his car is putting out.

YAY STREET RACING'S LIKE SO KEWL.

stock Civics probably have at most 100 to the wheels...and keep your racing to the track, where you can have proof(and don't kill people in the process).

Figured that, well he lost his license for 30 days, and a $500 fine, for going 87-102mph on the highway racing a camaro ...... The troopers set him up good. And he blew a valve so that was a $800 shop fee. We both learned a lesson on street racing, even tho I was home watching a movie when he did it. And I can't wait to go to the track again, April 2nd is opening night!!! And my 2.4 will be rocking by then.

An EX american is an SI in canada so it's a 1997 so it's a d16 with 127hp at the crank. Hondas respond well to mods, but he shoulda been able to take you actually. your car will not make 125hp at the crank with the mods you have all you have is the intake.. muffler won't get you very far on stock piping. PLUS it's an auto which makes your car even slower ( no pun intended). That SI should of killed you.

His CEL is on because the test pipe eliminates the 2nd O2 sensor found in the catalytic converter and that throws the code. As for a 99 2.2 vs a 97 Civic EX, seems pretty even to me. Racing from a stop, you probably take him because you launch a lot better and he just can't catch up, but going from a roll when the launch doesn't matter, the engines are probably pretty close in performance.
