We haven't driven them yet, but it's hard to believe the Malibu and Malibu Maxx can carry the SS badge with authority.
DETROIT — Chevrolet's family of SS models will grow by three members when the General Motors division unveils the TrailBlazer SS, Malibu SS and Malibu Maxx SS at the auto show in New York this week.

The new 2006 models join SSR, Silverado SS and Cobalt SS Supercharged along with the 2006 Impala SS and Monte Carlo SS, giving Chevrolet an unprecedented eight SS models to sell.

The TrailBlazer SS, a midsize sport-utility, features a Corvette-derived LS2 6.0-liter V8, rated at 391 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. On sale this fall, the TrailBlazer SS is outfitted with a track-tuned suspension and can be ordered with all-wheel drive.

Also available this fall are the SS versions of the Malibu sedan and stretched Malibu Maxx. They are equipped with a 3.9-liter V6 engine rated at 240 hp with 241 lb-ft of torque.

The SS — for Super Sport — first appeared as the name for a 1957 Corvette prototype racecar, introduced at Sebring. It gained traction in the 1960s muscle-car era on the Impala, Camaro, Chevelle and Nova models.

What it means to you: While GM has taken a serious bite out of it's once meaningful "SS" designation in past years, recent efforts like the Cobalt SS show the company might be serious about returning the badge to its former glory. But the Malibu Maxx SS makes us question everything all over again.

I suppose, the last car I drove with that was a Impala with 5 people in it and I'm assuming that the Malibu is significantly lighter.

A Colorado with the V6 that it's 5-cyl came from would make a good SS modal.

malibu ss - why not call it the chevelle? makes sense, right? you better believe that would create a lot of attention (and controversy)

Excellent.

Hopefully this will reduce GM sales even further, thus causing stock to plummet.

I can then purchase mass amounts of shares at a ridiculously low price and wait for GM's eventual revival.

trailblazer sounds pretty sweet

and i dont think that the 3.9 for the malibu is not as bad as you guys are making it out to be what you want it to be like 400hp or something gee, for its class thats a pretty decent amount of power

also now the Cobalt SS S/C will be a Cobalt SSR??? did i read that right

There will never be another Syclone/Typhoon. It's got some power with AWD, that's all in common. Much heavier, and it's a not a turbo 4.3l, just another high power V8. Though it still sounds sweet.

I knew about the Trailblazer SS, but not about the Malibu. Good find.

But it the SS Malibu power ehhh well its laking with huge 3.9L and ONLY 240Hp/241Tq. In a time when Chrysler makes a 250HP with 3.5Ls, Nissan makes 260Hp with 3.5Ls, Honda 3.0L makes 240Hp, Toyota's 3.3L makes 230Hp.

They should have put the 2.8L Turbo from the Saab, I mean it's on the same 9-3 Epsilon platform so no major work need to be done. I hope they atleast put a manual tranny like the G6's 3.9L.

As for the Trailblazer, I think it going to be very very quick for a truck like the 2005 SSR. Can you say Porche Cayenne hunting?

anyone know if there is a "refresh" of the regular malibu maxxs coming out soon? I really like the grill on the one in the picture and was wondering if it is just a new design or if its because its an "SS". Wonder how much the new "SS" cars are going to cost...

Neither are the 90's and 2000 monte carlo's but that didn't stop GM.

the malibu looks so much better without the gay ass silver bars along the front and back of the trunk and hood

Wow, you can bet that front bumper would sell in truckload quantities for the current malibu and Maxx owners. I bet it's a drect bolt-on.

It wont be long until normal trailblazer and normal malibu owners wil buy those SS badges off of eBay for $10 and then disgrace the real SS's.
