I'm looking to trade the ol' Sunfire in and purchase an 00-03 probly Jetta. I have driven a few of them and I think I'm in love. Just wondering if anyone had any comments or experiences with these cars.......

i have an 03 passat GLS with the same engine. you should drive a passat before you get the jetta. the jettas are to rough on the inside. the seats are so hard that i couldnt sit on them for a long time. all in all the engine is doing good at 68k miles.

good luck with your choice

My buddy just picked up an '05 GLI with the 1.8 motor. It was a pretty comfortable drive, I personally wouldn't get one though. I agree with Upstate about checking out a Passat first.

Have a good one,
Justin

I bought a used 2000 Jetta GLS 1.8T, leather interior last August. I love the car overall. I do agree, the seats are kinda hard, but simply adjust the back support, and it makes a big difference. Mine is still pretty much stock, I did put a chip in it, and a new diverter valve, and it made a huge difference. I recommend Jettas to anyone, if you're willing to put in the maintenance, you wont have a problem. I say definitely go for it

Powerful? A whole lot of torque down low, no top end, no horsepower, just torque...Kinda like a honda, but reversed! lol Get a 1.8T, get a chip, get a turbo-back exhaust, you'll be laughin' your way to 5th gear

Just make sure whatever VW you get isn't manufactured at the Mexico plant. Currently the WORST plant importing cars to America.

its mostly the golf's that are from mexico. my passat is manufactured in germany (95% parts i believe, are from germany).

All Golfs and Jettas are made in mexico, you dont have a choice for MK4s. All Passats and Jetta Wagons are made in Germany (lucky bastads lol).

Few things to look out for:

Window regulators
Coilpacks (recall)
Timing belt has to be changed at 96000KMs (dont know how many miles)

No passat is 1 model, Jetta is another. Jetta comes in 4 door sedan, and 4 door wagon (not called 5 door). Passat is the same, 4 door sedan, 4 door wagon. Jettas and Passats do not come in hatchback, those are called Golfs

^^^ hmmmm sounds like a repaeat of rumours heard from friends of friends of friends...first of all there were no window regulator issues on any volkswagens...the problem was with the window clips that hold the glass on to the assembly...up through 02 they were plastic and prone to breaking.....coil recall was on the 1.8T's it was a WG recall also only up through 02 and Timing belt is not 96000 KMS its 100000 miles.....not too big of a deal....mitsubishi says at 60 so thats not a bad deal......not to mention the current Jettas are being phased out for the new A5 platform...TDI 2.0, 2.5L inline 5 cylinder, and a 2.0L turbo are the new engines available....so now more 1.8T.....the 1.8T in the passat was prone to problems....1.8T in the jettas and Golfs had very little issues.....If you drive a passat....you will to Cam tensioner seals at some point in the life of the vehicle.....other than that.......no issues with these cars from a power train stance

Whatever those window things are called, they suck...Since you're a VW tech, you would obviously know that the welds on the circuit board for the window switch also let go, and you cant control the windows anymore, or it becomes intermitent, but i'm sure you already knew that.... As for the window clips, that's what i meant....Nothing like having your window fall into your door on a cold december morning, and shattering in your door (if you're one of the really unlucky ones)

Come up to Canada, do a little research, and you'll see that the timing belt has to be changed at 96000KMS, and it's about an $8-900 job, that's a big deal to most people, because, as I'm sure you know, you also have to replace the water pump and other accessories.

Sure, the new MK5 platform is coming out, but now you're talking about a $35000-40000++ CDN car, as opposed to a $15-20000 car...Obviously, he's not looking for something new.

Like any other car, they have their problems and maintenance, but they are great car, and you'd be very happy with a 2000 Jetta 1.8T

I think R32's are overpriced considering what you get.

I hate Volkswagens. My g/f's mom has an '02 Eurovan with the VR6 in it and I wouldn't dare touch that thing. Maybe because it's covered by this enormously huge plastic thing i dunno

my gf has a 01 jetta VR6 auto

i HATE the way it shifts, horrid throttle response, shifts gears up down up down up down then goes up... maybe thats just the tranny and if u get a 5 spd no problems

but ir eally dont like jettas all that much, seems very feminine to me

i have a jetta 1.8T 5speed. absolutely love the thing to death. and to the kid above who thinks they are feminine just wait till you get you ass walked on by one. this car was faster stock than my 97 cavZ-24 was with pretty much EVERY bolt on. and now with the chip DV intake catback and short shifter it is easily a low 14 second car. plus it rides soooo smooth. and the seats are not that bad at all. i am happy i sold the cav and got something different.

Well I still haven't found one cause Kamloos pretty much blows for good used cars. I'm gonna keep looking, but I am gonna go test drive a new Nissan Spec-V this afternoon. I'm not crazy about the exterior styling but I need to drive it to see what it's all about.
