It’s so cleverly hidden behind the luggage rack that at first glance you don’t notice the Jeep Commander’s key feature. The stepped roof yields more than three inches of headroom for third-row passengers, and Jeep’s first third-row seat is the whole point.

Jeep cites the seven-seater’s “traditional” design heritage in the Cherokee, but the boxy, upright shape is especially meaningful to the packaging. It maximizes cabin and cargo room in a vehicle only two inches longer than the Grand Cherokee with which it shares a platform. Keeping the size down allows trail-rated performance, and may help Jeep escape the softening of the market for the biggest sport/utilities.

Commander shares Grand Cherokee’s 109.5-inch wheelbase and its base V6 and rear-wheel drive, but also offers a choice of V8 engines (4.7-liter PowerTech or 5.7-liter Hemi) and three full-time 4x4 drivetrain options. Production of the 2006 model starts this fall.

it's got that Land Rover'ish stance to it.

Looks like it will perform quite well

They finally got rid of the BOX (Cherokee) that they had for what, 30 YEARS without a single redesign, and they couldn't resist bringing something back to replace it.

Dave, the old Cherokee was one of the best off-road vehicles around. And, even up until DC discontinued it, not much else could touch it, let alone anything near it in it's price class. Hell, even the Cherokee's replacement (the Liberty) can't even match it in everything that a Jeep is supposed to be. (off-road worthiness)

There was no need to discontinue the Cherokee. Had Daimler not been involved, the Cherokee might still be in production today. And rightfully so.

That said, I really like the new Commander. Except for some minor issues I have with the headlights, it's really attractive.

OOOO I like It looks a lot better than the prototype pictures. I'm digging the XJ look (which by the way still is best bang for the buck in off road performance). I hope they have a wood grain trim as an option that would be sweet

What the hell are you talking about, who cares if the Cherokee is still sold in China under the name "2500"? That obviously doesn't apply to us since we don't live in China, hence the reason Dave said it has been discontinued. Not to mention the fact that "its still in production" doesn't make it a better vehicle at all - I mean the best features that they list on the website that you provided are "Convenient Door handles" and "Large Headlights" - if those are the best features of the vehicle, thats pretty damn sad.

I don't think the new Commander is too bad though - it has the old XJ look, with a modern chassis and good quality - unlike the old Cherokee, which was about as refined as a farm tractor.

I don't see how anyone can seriously say the Cherokee is a better vehicle than the Liberty. Theres really no comparison, the Liberty is light years better than the Cherokee could have ever dreamed of being. The Liberty is much better looking, it is uncomparably more refined, its actually got a nice interior, and it is civilized on the pavement - not to mention its more more efficient and just as capable off-road.

You must be joking when you say there was "no need to discontinue the Cherokee". Thats like saying there was no need to replace the Cavalier. The market is more competitive than ever, and the the ancient Cherokee would be the Mockery of every compact SUV review if it were still being sold in the U.S. People expect a certain level of quality and refinement even in off-road vehicles, and that is something the Cherokee would never be able to deliver upon. It may have been "modern" 25 years ago, but times have changed, and for the better.

... no offense buddy, but what you don't know about the
XJ could fill the congressional library. To quote a phrase,
your knowledge of the XJ is "about as refined as a farm

huh. let's see ... XJ vs KJ ...

- better acceleration
  (0-60 mph): 9.1 vs 10.0 sec

- better fuel economy (automatic)
  16/21mpg vs 16/20mpg

- better braking.
  (60-0 mph): 128 ft. vs 144 ft.

- tighter turning radius:
  35.7 vs 35.9 ft.

- more cargo capacity.
  32.9 vs 29 69 cu. ft.

- lower curb weight
  3360 vs 3898 lbs.

- bullet proof engine. (just ask a mechanic)
- infinite stroker capabilities (320hp+ NA)
- infinite suspension capabilities (how high do you want to go?)

How can you argue with refinement? DiamlerChrysler designed the Liberty to be a better vehicle than the Cherokee from the ground up - if the Cherokee was as great as you say it is (which its not), they would have never had to redesign it. And anyone who says that the Cherokee is at all civilized has obviously never driven a modern automobile.

Where the hell did you pull those numbers from? The Liberty can do 0-60 in under 9.0 seconds flat, heres the Link. And thats with the optioned-out Limited 4x4 Model, the lesser models with the 6-speed manual are good for low to mid 8's in 0-60.

Quote:

- better fuel economy (automatic)
  16/21mpg vs 16/20mpg

More skewed stats. All you have to do is go on MSN Autos to get the correct numbers. A 4WD Cherokee automatic gets 15/20, while a 4WD V6 Liberty automatic gets 17/22. Big difference - the Liberty's 3.7 V6 is much more efficient than the old AMC 4.0 I6 Beast.

Quote:

- better braking.
  (60-0 mph): 128 ft. vs 144 ft.

The Cherokee doesn't stop from 60 in 128ft. Thats a joke - the number is more like 151ft. The Liberty has an overall better braking system than the ancient Cherokee, its not even worth arguing about - DC wouldn't "downgrade" the brakes from the Cherokee

Quote:

- tighter turning radius:
  35.7 vs 35.9 ft.

That is an extremely small difference that would never be noticeable in reality. Besides the fact that the Liberty has the superior steering system - Rack and Pinion versus the Cherokee's old recirculating ball system.

Quote:

- more cargo capacity.
  32.9 vs 29 69 cu. ft.

Once again, an extra 3 cubic feet of cargo room does not make the Cherokee a better vehicle whatsoever. Its expected that it would have at least a little more anyway, considering that it is a box on wheels.

Quote:

- lower curb weight
  3360 vs 3898 lbs.

The reason that the Liberty weighs more is because it is a better built vehicle. Its much higher quality than the Cherokee, not to mention the chassis is much more rigid and the whole structure is much safer.

The crash test ratings for the Liberty are:

Driver Front: 5/5
Passenger Front: 4/5

The Cherokee is not rated with the star system, but its overall performance was "MARGINAL" in the crash tests, with a "POOR" rating for the drivers side.

Quote:

The engine may be tough, but it is by no means an efficient or refined powerplant. 190HP in a huge 4.0 I6 is pretty pathetic by today's standards, and the engine had a redline of about 5K RPM's, plus it got terrible fuel economy in the process. Just because it doesn't break doesn't mean its a world-class engine as you'd like to make it out to be.

Re: 2006 Jeep Commander (pics)

here let me finish the argument by noting that, that is one ugly peice of crap. the XJ was ugly and crampt for space, and had great "traditional" chrysler build quality. th liberty is the off-road equivelent of a new Beetle. if you off-road...not just puddle hop...i'm talking climbing rocky paths in mud...the Liberty sux donkey balls. in that area the cherokee was far better than the liberty. the liberty is perfect for the "new" jeep which is all about it's "heritage" and not at all about actual "useage". all you buy when buying a new Jeep is the name. if you want a REAL Jeep you find one at a Jeep dealer. they're any Jeep vehicle made before 1995 and are on a trailo somewhere. today's Jeeps are on the freeway with a soccer mom yapping on her cell phone.

the Commander suffers from Hummer envy....and subsequentaily suffers from a patchy looking, non-flowing design. it's ugly and i'll bet the least off-road worthy vehicle Jeep has in it's stable today. pathetic.

wesmanw02... I refuse to argue with you any longer.

The one thing I cannot understand is your source for
confrontation. It cannot be because I drive an XJ and
you drive a Liberty because your cardomain page
shows you drive a 115hp J-body. It certainly cannot
be because I'm incapable of stating factual data
because I derived my numbers from Edmunds.
It cannot be because I laid minor insult to Dave; he
is a bigboy -- intelligent enough to defend himself.
Remember, you started bashing the Jeep Cherokee
immediately after I posted a picture of my vehicle.
I don't take kindly to insult. I owned a 2nd generation
J-body for 12 long-years, and I drove my fair share
of 3rd gens along with KJs. I made an educated
decision when I chose my poison, and never looked
back. I shiver at the thought of owning another GM
product, but I have every intention of purchasing yet
another XJ for my father very soon.

Regardless the case... I, truly, refuse to argue with
you any further. I have a proven track record of losing
arguments against stupid people. They tend to drag
me down to their level and beat me with experience.
You look like you've been doing this for a while...

RE: the 2006 Jeep Commander. I must agree that the
commander does not look like it will have any off-road
merit -- it's, obviously, too large. Its flattering to see
use of square sheet-metal used to pay homage to the
XJ, but It does need work. First off, the headlights look
disproportioned. Secondly, nothing strips a vehicle of
its "tough" persona than a shiny set of chrome wheels.

RE: the "box" comments. sheesh. what else should
a truck/hard SUV resemble? Curves belong on tall
Brazilian women, bottles of Polish Vodka, & Italian
Sports Cars.
