I need help on a probe FAST!!!!!
Thursday, March 24, 2005 6:05 PM
Ok I am thinking about buying a 93 ford probe gt automatic. My first question is how much quicker is a 5 speed probe than an auto? Second question is that the tranny is slipping in 3 and 4 gear. The owner says that the RPMs jump to 4000. Do you think it is worth $700 considering that I will probably need a new tranny? Thanks

Ford has the worst damn tranny's. Do you like the car? Can you afford it and a tranny. Consider this also, since the tranny's are so bad in them (as most ford cars) its really pointless to buy a used one because it'll have the same problem shortly after. Pretty much gotta rebuild it. I ran into that problem on my Talon. If you're unsure and kinda like it but could go either way. I say low ball him. Tell him 400. LMAO if he takes it you stole the car. If not then no biggy.

No, hold out. The auto tranny is not worth it. The 5 speed is alot faster than the auto and the auto's fail alot. A stock 5 speed speed will run a 15.2 more or less 1/4 and an auto will run around a 17. I'd follow Red's advice.

I get my Probe info from a post whore on probetalk. He just did a KLZE swap and other stuff. He's pretty knowledgable.

i have known alot of people with a probe..5 in all, and every single one of them the tranny went out, but if you can afford a new one go for it and a 5 speed is better and much quicker in my book

The 4 cylinder automatic tranny (Ford CD4E) is much more prone to failure than the V6 automatic tranny (Mazda GF4A) But still, i'd prefer a 5 speed.

Remember, the Ford Probe was designed by Mazda, and built on the same assembly line as the MX-6 and 626. The only difference between the engines and trannys in the cars, was that the Probe had Ford stamped on the lower valve cover, and the Mazda's had Mazda.

They still make aftermarket parts. KLZE V6 is the Mazda V6 from Japan. 200hp stock. Nice motor.

If you can get the car for cheap, then yeah.
Folks are correct on the tranny though, the ATX is a WEAK unit, and very costly to fix, along with the rest of the car.
The good thing is that, even though there is a minimal aftermarket, so many people gave up on them that salvage parts are readily available (mostly 2 gen), which includes the MTX, and parts.
Problem is they are difficult to work on, and common parts are uncommon.
They really are fun kick ass cars if you have the time, but not everyone has that.
I would never recommend one as a daily, but for a toy, hell yeah.
I had one for nine years, a 1 gen turbo, many probs, much more fun though.
But like I said, better off a toy.

I would have to agree they are a pain to work on, VERY little room in the engine compartment. Also I wouldnt go for the auto, the 5 speed is alot more durable and quite a bit quicker. But they are fun cars... by the way I had a 93' 5 speed.

I have a 98 mazda 626 (same car, different sheet metal and interior) and i've never had a problem doing anything on it. The location of the oil filter is kinda stupid, but other than that. I've changed the alternator, water pump, timing belt, fuel pump, etc.
