WRX boost question
Saturday, March 26, 2005 9:47 PM
K my friend has a completely stock 02 WRX. He just dropped it off to me to have a few things installed. He says that its not boosting properly, he took it to a dealer in wyoming and they said there is nothing wrong. In first gear it pulls pretty hard but in any other gear it doesnt pull as hard. I cant really say if theres a problem my self cause I've never actually driven a wrx. Any one have any ideas, im going to be taking it a dealer in denver and hopefully they will have a clue.

well, it is AWD. AWD usually pulls hard in first then after that yo udont feel as fast as you are going.

Whats it boosting at in 2/3? Look up what it should be at and compare. I agree, its AWD you'll feel that.

I know its not the same, but it kinda is. My explorer is the same way. Its AWD V8 and first gear just feels like its a monster after that doesn't feel that quick, but the speedo moves.

Ummm.. In any car you will never put more torque to the ground than when you are in first gear. That is purely because of what gears do (trading some torque for speed or vice versa).

He has the stock subaru 3 gauge set-up. So I cant really tell what boost he's hitting, its all in Bar

Sounds like you buddy's car might not be hitting full boost. It definitely shouldn't feel like its lagging after 1st gear, once your into boost, it should pull pretty hard right through the gears.

Since the boost gauge is in BAR, what you can do it convert it to PSI and go from there. 1 BAR = 14.5 PSI - so it should be just just below 1 BAR, seeing as the WRX boosts around 13.5-14 PSI.

Heres the formula to help you convert, good luck

PSI = 14.5037 x Amount of BAR

Last night when it was colder out it seemed to get closer to 1 bar than it did today when it was warmer. I realize thats normal though. I'm almost starting to think its more along the lines of that he's so used to his car that it doesnt feel as fast as it used to. I dorve the car quite a bit today and it feels fine to me. First does pull the hardest, but the rest definately arent lacking. There just smoother than first. He want me to install a dual stage boost controller so that should solve his problems

I have my boost control set at 14.5. But make sure you set it in a high gear. I set it in 3rd at about 16 just to see what it would be like once. But when I got on the freeway it creeped a bit in 5th and hit the fuel cut off. -scared the crap out of me.

I also have an uppipe, and I flowmaster exhaust. I also have a Blitz short ram intake, and an HKS SSQV bov. (although that isn't a performance mod....it sounds soo nice.)

It pulls hard in most gears. It did slow down things quite a bit though when I put my 18's on. But I still walked away from a Audi twin turbo the other day. a T4 I think it was called. I don't know anything about them, but it had at least the exhaust done and it put up a pretty good fight.
