s-10 zr2's????
Tuesday, April 12, 2005 6:34 PM
Hey guys, im looking at a 1999 s-10 zr2 i believe it is. It has about 100 k miles on the clock. It is in very nice condition other than the bed, which is understandable. It is a truck after all. It has a v6 i believe also. Does anyone have any knowledge of these? One of my friends who is a mechanic said the vortec engines get insane mileage. Hes got about 200k on his old s-10. He said he hasnt had many problems either. Does anyone have any info about these?

Well the gas mileage is "insane", if you mean that in a bad way

The Vortec 4.3 autos tend to get in the low teens for city, high teens for highway. The 5-speed manuals improve both city/highway by a few MPG, to about 16/20 or so. Definitely not a very fuel efficient vehicle, but not a pig either.

Power wise the S10 4.3 is pretty good. Plenty of power for acceleration and passing, and they can run at highway speeds pretty effortlessly. The 5-speed makes them much more peppy, but the auto is still fine.

The Vortec 4.3 should run for a long time, like your mechanic said. They are a well built engine, and can takes years of mileage and abuse without any serious problems. I'd say 200K would be entirely possible in a well taken care of S10.

As far as off-road capability - as far as I've seen, they are very good. The ZR2 package is well worth it, since it gives you just about everything you need to hit the trails stock - off-road suspension package, big off-road tires, full underbody skidplates, and AutoTrac 4WD.

Check out this site:
ZR2 Pics and Videos They have some nice footage and pics of what the ZR2 Blazer/S10 is capable of off-road

Hope that helps.

I wasn't sure if you wanted anymore opinions, but my dad had an S-10 with the 4.3 Vortech, but it wasn't the ZR-2. I can tell you that the 4.3 is a very hearty motor. He bought it with 80k miles and sold it with 150k miles and I believe he changed the oil twice. Even abused with 150k miles on it, it started right up every morning without a problem.

And as for the burn out comment.... O yes, the burn outs are spectacular lol

well all s-10 have pretty weak front ends, lower ball joints and idler arms are offten bad but not to bad to replace. the pinon seals leak too, but also not bad to replace, and the lower intakes commonly leak, but also not to bad to replace. real that is the only problems i've seen with them and they are all easy to fix. If the price is right i would go for it.

im still tryign to figure out if i can afford insurance on two cars cuz i have been looking to buy a s-10 ZR-2 with a 5spd

but i dont want only a truck, i still love the much more agile feel of driving a car, id just like to have a truck to use as a daily driver and mod the cav

but from what ive herd, they have little problems here and there, not really any major drivetrain stuff
