I like the Volt but with a 40-43 thousand dollar price tag it is well out of the price range for most people. Even if I used a generous figure of saving 200 a month in gas and subtracted that from the monthly payment that was figured using GMAC's longest term of 72 months with a 6.7% interest rate that is still $530 a month! Keep in mind you also have registration renewal on a 40,000 dollar car every year which would be roughly 500 bucks the first few years.

I wonder how prone it is to mechanical failure

Don't get me wrong I am not saying the price is too high. I would believe due to the cost to engineer and build it that it is the price they have to sell it for to make a reasonable profit. It does not matter how much you want it and how great and green the car is if you simply can't afford it. I know that the Government is already offering $7500. Now I am not normally a fan of government involvement in running a business but considering at this point GM might as well be known as government motors a larger rebate seems like a win win to me and might be more effective than the cash for clunkers program.

Oil changes would not exist with the Volt so say you spend 30 bucks every 3 months on an oil change this car would save you 10 a month. Keep in mind it would cost you 45 a month in electric cost to charge it up daily

I think many people question this. On the Toyota Hybrids they offered a very good warranty on all the related parts so buyers would not be scared away by that. It seems as though GM is doing the same with their warranty. See the following link. http://www.chevrolet.com/volt/features-specs/

On the subject of the tax credit it is not something that is just given to you at the time of purchase and applied to the amount financed. It is sent to you after the purchase forcing you to make high monthly payments until you can refinance your loan with the amount from the tax credit.

Wade just an FYI the Government offers a rebate incentive to every manufacturer who offers a Hybrid vehicle from Honda to Toyota to Ford and GM. It has nothing to do with their involvement which by the way is soon to be over with the selling of stock.

3500 down gets you a 350 month lease. much safer way to go with a vehicle like this as the price is going to come down and as they start building into the second model year and third year and ramp up production.

Still haven't actually seen one for sale. How is it picking up awards without even being put through real paces??

I don't know about Automobile Mag but Motor Trend's cars of the year has always been open to "all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles", according to their website.

Looks like Obama's Socialist wundercar is one hot ticket!

Safecar.gov

NHTSA Action Number: NHTSA Recall Campaign Number:
PE11037 N/A
Make: CHEVROLET Model: VOLT
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS LLC
Model Year : 2012
Component(s) :
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY
Date Investigation Opened : November 25, 2011
Date Investigation Closed : Open
Summary:
On May 12, 2011, NHTSA performed a NCAP side pole impact test, followed by a post impact rollover test on a Chevrolet Volt. In connection with that testing, NHTSA has identified the potential for intrusion damage to the battery which may result in a substantial thermal reaction and fire. Twenty-one days after the May 12, 2011 testing, delayed thermal heating and pressure release resulted in a fire that consumed the Chevrolet Volt and three other vehicles in close proximity at the test facility. During the week of November 14, 2011, NHTSA performed follow-up battery-level tests to simulate the incident. NHTSA performed three tests simulating the mechanical damage to a battery pack observed from the first incident. Two of the three tests produced thermal events, including fire. Because of these test results, NHTSA has opened this investigation to examine the potential risks involved from intrusion damage to the battery in the Chevrolet Volt, in coordination with the agency’s ongoing review of the emerging technology involved in electric vehicles.

Yes yes...it is due to not properly draining the electricity out of the battery, and this only occurs if the battery cooling system is damaged in the crash, as well as the battery.

Damaged battery + electricity + no cooling system = Fire.

GM is offering loaner vehicals to any Volt owner who doesn't feel safe driving their car, untill they can sort the matter out.

And yes, ANY GM vehical, including a Corvette if they so choose.

Its electric heat and if thats not enough its ALSO HAS A GAS MOTOR.

Why won't it work when its -30*C?? You really think GM didn't test it for cold weather? Even been to Kapuskasing, Ontario? IE. GM's cold weather testing facility, I can assure you its plenty @!#$ cold up there, its record low is -49.5*F....

Good grief people, just cause its electric doesn't mean its junk....stop being so closed minded!
