1999 to 2000 ecu swap?
Thursday, July 12, 2007 8:47 AM

Has anyone done a 1999 to 2000 ecu swap? If so, did you repin the harness? Wht else is required to be changed, the BCM?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well... its pretty complicated...

The harness is plug and play on the ECU side, however you don't have a BCM, so you'd have to wire in a BCM, cluster, body harness, and quite a bit of other wiring.

Ok, thanks.

Please clarify. What if I didn't add a BCM(body control module) to control the cluster, gauges etc. Yet, still added the ecu? Would I not have any cluster features or instrumentation working?

How does my 99 ECU process the instrumentation inputs now? Are they direct feeds, no BCM?

Thanks for responding.

I'm trying to figure all that out now for my ECU project, but as it stands, if you just put in a 2k+ ECU, you won't have the cluster at all. The 99 does not have a BCM, so it talks directly to the cluster, I have to pull up the wiring diagrams to see if it uses raw VSS, RPM, Temp, etc signals or speaks the VPW UART that the ECU does.

Good info.

Please let me know what/when, you figure out. I don't want to create I'm going to buy a 2000 ecu tonight from the boneyard and I'm going to try a couple of things to see what happens.

Reun has a 2000 ecu in his 99....and he has some working gauges....if I remeber correctly.

If I'm correct you should be able to get a 2000+ dash harness (which has the hook up for the BCM, gauge cluster etc...) and it will plug into the engine bay harness block by the firewall. Put in the 2000+ ECU, do theft learn and go. I will look into this more because I have a dash harness lying around.

^^Don't you also need the Fuel tank, Evap canister and lines? Evap is in the back on the 00+, so im sure all that wiring is different as well..

I want to do this swap as well, but not sure if its worth all the re-wiring..

Well if you use the pre 2000 engine bay harness the evap stuff is still going to be in the same place. I will do some research on this this weekend.

HUM....... never thought of using engine harness from pre 00'

On a side note. I downloaded a 2000 supercharger reflash file into my 99 pcm and it works. The only issue I have is with the BCM. All of the warning lights stay on. Also, the tach, and ect gauge don't work but the speedometer and fuel level do. Aside from the tach, ect and warning lights everything else works perfect.

You kinda need the tach though dont ya? lol

I have an Autometer DPSS which has a tach and shift light. But yeah, I wasn't happy that the tach didn't work after the reflash. It's a small sacrifice to be able to run off MAP pressure.

So you changed nothing and just downloaded the 2000 tune on your 99 computer?

Yup. I also bought a 2 bar map. the car works perfect except for the warning lights being are always on, Tach is not working and ECT gauge is not working. Again, I have external gauges so I don't care. I made NO wiring changes. I'm running a turbo set-up and it hauls a$$.

OK, if one was to do this, and get a BCM could the wires be repined to the 99- cluster....or would a BCM and 00+ cluster be needed for no warning lights.

Damn E-check BS here in Ohio. GER Any warning lights or anything and you fail.

A 00+ cluster would be needed, the 99- cluster doesn't know how to talk to the BCM no matter how you wire it.

Ok, in theory. If one was to reflash a 00+ speed density tune on the 99 alpha-n PCM, and then buy a 00+ cluster and a BCM. It would all be plug-n-play and have no warning lights with all gauges functioning.

Yes I know the 00+ cluster will not fit in the 99- dash, but still.
This would work in theory right.

Ahh i found it Mike lol.

Hmm, Ill have to try this..

Mike, why wouldnt the cluster fit in our 99's? Physically they are the same right?

No Physically the 00+ is different angle and I think slightly bigger. I know they are different....do not remeber exactly what is different size wise.
They are close...but I do not know if they are close ENOUGH to fit right.

Ok, Ill have to borrow 1 of Treys 00+ cluster to see if it fits, then get a GM S/C flash from Whininz

You can make a 00+ cluster fit in a pre 00 car. Just need a little modifying.
