Sounds like a cool version of OBD-I, I miss the days of tunning with a flash...

Well I think my ABS is worthless except in the rain and on dry pavement, in the snow is SUCKS and I pull the fuse lol. As far as guages, my RPM guage is limited to 7,000 RPM, my speedo only goes to 115, there is no oil pressure (and we know how accurate GM oil pressure guages are...), no amperage guage, hell the only guages I like are the temp guage and the gas guage, wait I take it back I hate the gas guage too it always seems to be going to the "E" position...

Anyways I will be doing the same

mr. pute: goodluck bud, i'm sure you already know but if you are worried about tripping CEL's the megasquirt wont prevent that!

not on topic, but we all should have a CEL for the radiator fan trick. specifically keeping the fan always on instead of going on at 215, eak!

See....that's the beauty of a stand alone system. The CELs that are hindering to your goals with boost or whatever all mess with either timing or fuel output. Regardless of what CELs are active on the ECU the MS will ALWAYS have total control over spark and fuel!!

Simple as that. CELs are completely harmless if you are controlling fuel and spark on your own.

I have to disagree. I know the car may be running fine, but if you trip a CEL in PA you run the risk of failing the emmissions test. That is a major hurdle for me until I find a way around it. DAMN OBD2 tests!!

Well, I am a state qualified emmissions tester in Colorado, and trust me there is always a way to pass. Not like I would ever do anything illegal, but I know a guy who might....

Anyways in most states the check engine light and codes are more a service warning now then a failure, because there are so many things that can trip that little bugger.

Honestly here I would pass a car with this system, this is what I do every day at work for a test:

1) Does the car have a gas cap and fuel restrictor
2) Does the car have an EGR (if equiped) and does it APPEAR to be functioning
3) Does the car have any type of secondary air system and does it appear to be functioning, as originally equipped
4) Is the catalytic converter(s) presesnt and OE spec
5) are the O2 sensors present and not disconnected
6) tailpipe emmissions

Granted different states use different standards, buy a car with this system I doubt I would even notice. Usually I don't even grap the code scanner unless the light is on anyways, and that's just to show the customer what it's on for and reset it. If I saw all those codes on a car, but the car was running, I would just think something is FUBAR and not pay any mind.

Believe it or not, they talk about tuning for passing emissions in the MS tuning manual. heh

Anywho, back to my original topics.

Whos going to send me their maps for the MS?

IM also thinking about ditching the EManage and am looking for other solutionss for fuel...so far...this seems like my best bet....

But I have to know...what is the cost on all this?

I am using megasquirt on my 2001 2.2l turbo and I find it to be good, lots of tuning though.
Re: Megasquirt Revisited

I passed the electronic obd inspection test by reconnecting the stock computer to the injectors and put in a stock narrow band sensor and drove it a week before the test. This was turboed with the MS hooked up to everything else. I had no check engine light and since my car is a '97, i'm allowed to have 2 obd monitors unready, but I only had 1.

They don't even open the hood or look under the car anymore. I also heard theres ways around this test if you know the guy doing the inspection well enough.

this is a really noobish questions but i'm trying to learn more about this system..

when you hook it up. do you have to rewire everything (injectors,IAT, o2, fuel pump etc...)
or is there a way just connected it to the original wiring harness?

what exactly does the relay board do?

i'll probably have more questions soon

Re: Megasquirt Revisited
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 5:38 PM
I'm getting ready to order this soon.

and need to know, do i need the relay board? would it be better to get the relay board?
Will i need to rewire everything like i ask above.
can i use my stock sensors and everything?

Re: Megasquirt Revisited
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 9:15 PM
while the relay board isn't required, i would personally reccommend it. with the relay board you have 3 relays ready for your use, 4 fuses for protection and enuf connections for running fuel, spark and a couple of extra items like a boost controller or the likes. of course you would have to customize the MS to relay board cable to do any of the extra things, but it is easy to do. i reccommend wiring all 37 pins (all are straigh across ie 1-1, 2-2 ect.) all in one shot just for future expansion and the likes.

I have a long way to go on my car and as lazy / unmidivated as i am there wont be much progress anytime soon. I have finished the MS install since i took these pics so i will take more pics soon so you guys can see the rest. but here are the pics i have for anyone wondering what MS looks like.

This is the megasquirt unit istelf (megasquirt II) and a harness kit.

This is the conduit i ran to make changes easier.

I pulled this back some more from whats pictured here to prevent it from hitting under heavy braking.

Mess of wires under the hood!

power for megasquirt and the injectors hooked up to the new fuseblock.

A view of the fuesblock and relay to show how they are hooked up.

The wires a bit more organized but still needing wrap and proper routing.

so far you are ahead of me in getting it in. i won't be able to start until aug 21 as i work every day until then (240 hours in 3 weeks ) then i have a whole week to piss around at getting it to work. i aim to have it in and tuned NA for a while before i put my rebuilt turbo motor in.

Re: Megasquirt Revisited

I should of updated a couple days ago but my Megasquirt is somewhat installed at this point.

The following has been done so far:

  • Mounted relay board and main unit
  • TPS wired
  • IAC wired
  • Coolant temp wired
  • Alcohol injector wired
  • Alcohol injection pump wired to fuel pump relay control
  • 2.5 bar MAP sensor relocated outside of the main unit in the engine bay

The only problems I'm having at this point are that the MAP sensor has stopped working since I relocated it and the calibration settings for the temp sensors are all screwed up. Not a huge deal. Just gotta find the resistance tables that correspond to the stock sensors as well as put the MAP sensor back on the main unit and run a 6ft line extension off of my boost gauge.

With that said, I don't see why people are doubling up on sensors. The stock sensors work just fine with the MS and the ECU concurrently.

I should have pictures up soon. I need to finish getting the alcohol injection end of things working properly and then I'll move onto controlling fuel. The final step is to control spark as well but that won't happen until I get the alky and fuel running perfect.

so i should also order the wiring harness.?
and i guess i still don't understand how this can work in conjuction with the stock computer?

The harness is optional. I just figured it would make things easier and for 50 bucks its well worth it.

its easy for ms to work alongside the stock computer. they dont directly interface with eachother.

sep seonsors are a good idea. sharing them throws them out of range for megasquirt and you have to re calibrate, it does the same to the stock ecu. i dont know about you guys but the stock ecu still controlls the fuel pump, idle air, (since i have ac) and cooling fan for my car. having the wrong cts reading can cause all sorts of havoc. all you need is part of the coolant hose (metal) from a 2200 and splice it into a coolant line to provide an extra bung for that cts. the iat is easy . just drill and tap the plastic housing before the tb or grab a jy embow with a spot fro one on it. just make sure you can attach it securely or boost will surely blow it out.

ok so basicly its easier to run with 2 of each sensors, one for stock ecu and one for MS,
won't that confuse the stock ecu and try to make corrections but can't since the injectors won't be hooked up to the stock ecu?

Mr. Pute, Earlier in the thread you said you planned to use ms with gm's dis. did you ever have any luck with that? i only saw where one guy had something kinda working on a bench for gm dis but not on a car. Im trying to put a few options infront of me before i tackle ignition controll. I have all the edis goodies but mounting the 36-1 wheel and sensor on the engine while on the car and getting it withen a few degrees of where it needs to be with the engine in the car will be a pita. if i can use the stock stuff for now it would be nice

i still have a ton of questions,
Should i double up on all the sensors or just certain ones?
how does this thing work, without messing up the stock ecu?
I just want to control fuel right now, timing shouldn't be that big of a deal

Re: Megasquirt Revisited
Monday, August 15, 2005 10:05 PM
are you using megasquirt for a boost aid? if your not pushing to much boost and will run premium fuel you shouldint need to worry to much about timing. just hafta watch yourself. it replaces the stock computer for whatever functions you want it to. if you are unsire of how it can do what it does it may not be the best solution for you. systems like this or even the e-manage are not for the inexperenced. not to say you cant do it. you can do anything you put your mind to but you need to get informed before you consider it. go ahead and set aside some time and read all the info on www.megasquirt.info. it will help you understand what megasquirt does and how. read all the parts of the "mega manual" not just the ones you think pretain to you. its all good info if nothing else it will give you a stronger understanding of EFI in general. doubling up on sensors is a bit of a debate on here. it all depends on how much effort you are willing to put forth to make sure that they are putting out accurate measurements. if you have the means to double up on them i would suggest dooing so. its alot easier to calibrate ms to work with incorrect readings but you wont have much luck correcting what the stock ecu sees. if you dont plan to let the stock ecu controll anything on the engine it wont matrer much atall what it thinks. if you do then you are best off with seperate sensors. in my setup the stock ecu will still controll the trans (4a), the cooling fan, the idle air selenoid and all the other little things in the car its part of so it is important that my stock computer recieves proper signals. its all up to you. but like previously stated stop now and go read that website. most of it is MSI stuff but there is a section for msII changes.

Roscoe,

I haven't touched my car at all for the past couple of days. Too many other priorities at the moment. I'll get back into it in the next few days.

I've read the thread you're talking about regarding the gm dis. The stock ignition control module on our cars will NOT work because it has two control signal inputs for cylinder firing. The way the guy got his stuff working is that he took an old LX-347 ICM off of an older quad 4 that had an OBD-I ecu. This ICM has only one control signal input. I haven't read GM's patent on the LX-347 nor have I seen the actual explanation of how it works, but I'm assuming since the 7X crankshaft position sensor connects to the LX-347 directly, it uses that to determine which of the two coils to fire. Confusing yet?

In short, I will be attempting to complete my MS installation within the next week or two. I just need to find time to finish it all.

yes the crank pos sensor does connect directly to the module. i will be attempting to run the stock module and the one i got from an odb1 car in parallel to minimum get a tach signal for the MS since my car doesn't have a tach line. more than likely i'll be using spark right away, but will have to see about what i have to do to the stock module if i do that.

all this should be done next week.
